Will there be jobs?

Hey guys,
I am working on only my PPL at the time, but I plan on going to ATP (or the like) to finish up my ratings, and try to be a CFI for a while. I have been reading the threads on this site and they have helped out a lot already. I am looking for your educated guesses on this one...

By the time that I have built up enough hours (1100+) (2 years), do you think there will be any jobs??? Obviously I plan on going into an RJ, then up to the big leagues. I am 21 now, so i would still be pretty young once I have the time. I just dont want to get all my ratings and time... and be left with just an expensive hobby... So what do you think, will the industry turn around?\

Yes. Right when you want it to? Probably not. Should this matter to someone all of 21 years of age, 39 years from mandatory retirement? Not in the slightest.

Contrary to what the previous poster says.. Yes there will be jobs. But start right now. Meet people, get your name out to pilot who work for the companies that you want to work for. It's gonna be tough, but don't get discouraged.

Get your sights set on a place to learn and teach for the next two years. Carry a stack of business cards with you. Get peoples names, addresses and phone numbers that you talk to and ask them if you can contact them periodically

It's called networking, and if you start now, work hard, yes, you can find a job. Personally, it may be easier for you to get a job, than a furloughed pilot with 10K hours.

There is a book out called, Job Hunting for Pilots (I think that's the name) get it, read it, live it.

Personally, I'm on my third job, granted, I was flying skydivers, delivering King Airs, and now I'm a CFI, but in the next 6 months, I'll be right seat in a Citation S/II and a Falcon 50, or so I'm told, and it had everything to do with networking.

I agree with Scuba, if you start networking now then you will have a lot easier time getting that forst job and so forth.

The short answer is yes.

There will be jobs.

Not enough for everyone.

In fact, not enough for as many pilots, by percentage, that were qualified in 2000.

The pay will be lower for many of those jobs.

Some jobs, like night check hauling, will almost disappear.

The percentage of pilots making the kind of money that drew many people to aviation will shrink dramatically.


The question you need to ask yourself is this: Can I afford to be poor for a decade? Will this be a career in a few years?

For a few, yes it will be. For others, it will be frustration and disappointment.
