Just wondering why they put the DFW VOR on stilts? Would there be inferference from the buildings around or is it some sort of anti-tampering design? Or maybe my brain is just fried from spending 2 weeks at simuflite and its really not floating at all.
 
I have heard that it is some type of "Super VOR" with a range that far exceeds a high VOR.
 
SKC that is what it looks like. In Texas everything is bigger.
 
I'm gonna guess that since Maverick VOR/DME is located in the median of the very busy southern entrance/exit to the airport, it is elevated to avoid passing cars and trucks from interfering with the radiated signals. The nearby Cowboy and Ranger VOR/DMEs are located in open areas and are of the conventional inverted cone design.

I think avbug may be right about the art aspect of the design also.:p
