Why is FBI investigating NWA Flight Attendants?

The FBI is investigating a small number of Northwest Airlines Corp. flight attendants, the airline confirmed Wednesday.

The Eagan-based carrier said it is cooperating with the FBI inquiry of a group of flight attendants on a single flight. The airline did not disclose the reason for the investigation, but said it is not involve flight safety.

Robert Krabbe, assistant contract administrator for the Professional Flight Attendants Association, told The Associated Press that the flight attendants were questioned, but no arrests were made. Krabbe said the flight in question landed in Detroit, but he did not know where it originated.

Flight attendants union spokesman Peter Fiske told Minnesota Public Radio that Northwest (Nasdaq:NWAC - News) had called for the FBI inquiry.

So NWA tips off the FBI that their flight attendants are tampering with smoke detectors. Then they issue a press release saying that safety was never compromised. Which way is it? I think the frozen temperatures of MN have finally gotten to NWA managements brains.
