Why do captains have to authorize a jumpseater with a seat in the cabin. It seems like a waste of time and paper and should be handled by the gate agent.

This varies with the airline. This is still a pilot allowed to right to ride on your flight based on your current jumpseat policy. Letting them ride in a more comfortable seat in the back is a courtesy. They are still a jumpseater, and must abide by the jumpseat dress policy, etc.

In some cases, even if not in uniform, the jumpseater cannot have a cocktail when sitting in the cabin.

Most Jumpseat rules state the captain must review the documentation of the rider. Even if it's your own company crewmember sitting in the back, you should be reviewing their stuff, yet not many do.

It all comes down to how the rider is listed. Jumpseat vs. Non-Rev

I think the point of this post is good.

The other thread everyone is up in arms because the Captain said no. If everyone is going to freak out when Captains say no, why do we even ask at all? It seems everyone just expects a yes, so why ask?

If everyone on this thread agrees the Captain should be asked, then why do we have the other thread about the Captain that said no?

What do you hand the captain?
Pilot certificate
Medical certificate
ALPA card
Employee badge from current airline
jumpseat pass for him/her to sign

It just seems like a lot of unneccessary stuff to be handing a captain when he/she could spend their time accomplishing the preflight and checklists

the Horizon jumpseat form specifically used to say to wait until after the flight to bug the flight crew. i always did on departure out of respect, but not all are required.

Hey Osama..

If you're asking maybe you don't need to know.
