Okay most of us can remember when working for an Airline was great. Pilots were Rockstars (see "Catch me if you can") and most in the business were respected. Not anymore...AT ALL!!! WHY?


Is it management, Unions getting soft, government, L.C.C., or the flying public not wanting to pay services?

Its the fault of the entire underlying basis of the industry. Airlines are too easily able to compete with each other and passengers don't inherently have brand loyality. As long as this is the case, the airline industry as a whole will loose money and it'll suck for anyone, including pilots.

Now back to the orginal question....and it is a serious question not to start any political crap or anything, but a question.

I ask this because my mom's friend is flying to Japan. I asked her who she was flying on and she says JAL. And then starts to bash the American airlines and how crappy the service is etc. I ask her how much she paid for the trip and she says like $800. So is it American Airlines really sux at service and admenities or is something else?​

What do you want me to say? Many airlines declared bankrupcty, and forced paycuts while getting the judge to issue an injunction against striking. If a union can't strike, you've taken away their strongest weapon.

9/11, incompetent management, high oil prices... those are three reasons quickly off the top of my head why there is the crap.

As for your JAL vs AA question, service levels have been cut on all US carriers (exception: Continental).

Spirit just announced that they will charge extra for a 2nd checked in bag, and $100 for a third check in bag.

Soon, your ticket price will be so low, it will get you from point A to point B. Nothing else. You want peanuts? Coke? Pay extra. Checking in *any* bags? Pay extra. Heck, I can even see coin-operated lavatory doors.

With all due respect, I think that when United went bankrupt and was allowed to wash away their pensions and given time and again extensions, that forced everyone else to follow suit. If when United had gone bankrupt and the judge had not allowed the pensions to be wiped away and the work groups had been allowed (dare I say...........actually followed thru) to strike and maintain pay despite any 1113c proceedings, then they most likely would have been wiped off the map and balance would have been restored.
note: not to bash any united pilots here, i am glad you still have a job to go to today, it just seems to me this is where it all started........

My .02: the imbalance of power between labor and management over the last 10-15 years. Prior to 9/11 the power rested overwhelmingly with each labor group (not just pilots). Unions were playing a game of constant oneupsmanship and management had little choice but to pony up the cash to avoid a strike. Post-9/11 the classic overcorrection took place. It became politically unthinkable to allow an airline to fall victim to new competitive forces so some carriers were effectively subsidised by the ATSB while the flow of injunctions gave the bargaining advantage back to management.

The RJ hastened the demise of the "old way" by taking away the main advantage of the mainlines: jets. Give the passenger the jet they want but at a fraction of the cost of a mainline Pilot? Of course! Staff 'em with pilot mill grads desperate to start paying back their loans.

Finally, what the heck: GoJets. Added to their existing resume' of global warming, AIDS, and Michael Jackson's recent indiscretions.

Oh, and about the JAL vs. US Carriers discussion. Unless US carriers find a way to limit the age, size, girth of flight attendants on long-haul routes (hell, any routes for that matter), they'll never hold a candle to 90% of the foreign carriers. Height limits. Weight limits. Good-looking limits. Age limits. How can we possibly compete?

Things since 9-11 have definitely been on downward slide, however....

The biggest and most shocking blow, at least to me, has been the courts allowing Ch. 11, and a companies restructuring efforts to trump the railway labor act, and basically cut off whatever balls ALPA had left. Shareholders above the working man, and yes, we are working men (and women). Collective bargaining no longer exists, now that we need it the most.

I think you hit the nail on the head. It's not just the pilots either, it goes clear down to the guy fueling the plane who could probably make a couple bucks an hour more fueling construction equipment. In the end, we all just like working around airplanes.

It's the percieved "glamour" of the industry, and "doing what you love" that allows us to rationalize taking concessions.

I don't think everybody on this board is an idiot or a simpleton! If you'll re-read my post you'll see I predicted 10 people would "get" the subtlety of the post. That said, I've concluded that a few are idiots and simpletons. For example, here's one.

I suppose I could say that I have a little more time on my hands while I sit Reserve or enjoy the stimulating distractions available to me at our spectacular layover hotels...but the truth is I zip over here as a break from a writing project I'm working on. It's oddly distracting, and I enjoy the intellectual isometerics...for the most part.
