The wife and I are moving out there next month.

We're going to be looking for an apartment while our house is being built. Any specific places to stay away from? Any must sees??

I've lived in Boulder City, and Henderson, each for about 6 months.

I liked both, yet am partial to BC. If you're not familiar, BC is about a 20-30 min. drive from downtown Vegas. I thought it was cool(not in the summer!) because it has sort of a small town feel to it, it is close to Lake Mead, and if you want some big city action, it's only a short drive away.

Henderson is on the southern edge of Las Vegas; Nice, newer area, if not a little suburbia-ish. Clean.

Places to avoid are non-specific parts in downtown, or N. Vegas.

Also, avoid the newer casino slots. They're not very generous.

Stay away from the strip. Only a block either side will put you in a place you don't want to be. Not to mention the fact that the number of tourists in the area would get old too. While I have never lived there, considering how much time I spend there, it is like a second home.

There are some great places to live on Sahara west of I-15. If you are unfamiliar, look for the Palace Station on the west side of the interstate. Get off there and drive west. Go past all the car dealers and after about 4 or 5 miles, you will get into a really nice area.

There are also some nice apartment complexes on Craig Road. To get there, drive south on I-15 out of town. You'll eventually see Cheyenne Road and then Craig. The Craig exit sign will have signs for Nellis AFB. It takes about 15 minutes to get there from downtown. When you get off (so to speak), turn left (away from Nellis) and go about 3 miles. It is a descent part of town and as a bonus, there is a Krispy Kreme on the left hand side of the road. If I were you, I'd live as close as possible to the Krispy Kreme. By the way, 9 pm is the best time to go. They have just finished the glazed so they are still warm and they are making cinnimon rolls which are piping hot.

I don't reside in LAS but I do travel there quite often since it is one of my favorite escapes from reality. ! ! I am a big boxing fan and Las Vegas is probably the best city in the world to catch a top fight not to mention the championship golf courses which are awesome there. The best thing about Vegas is that there are alot of places that are not too far of a drive and the city has something to offer for everyone.

The city is not as "dirty" and "dangerous" as many make it out to be, I would attribute the negative comments due to somes of knowledge of LAS. As long as you are careful and take a few precautions you will have no problems or worries whatsoever. If you get the chance eat at Picasso at the Bellagio which is a must since the food is out of this world and it is a pretty romantic place to eat at since they have a water and light show nightly that adds to the mood.

Laughlin Nevada is only about an hour drive from Vegas and is a nice escape. Laughlin is right on the Colorado river and offers gaming, sight seeing, golfing, and a nice relaxing atmosphere. I usually go there to rent the jet ski's and for the scenery since it is not that populated and you can get pretty good deals on hotels there during certain times of the week. If you are into the outdoors then you probably would enjoy visiting this city. Do check this place out if time permits on your end.

I usually also will drive into Palm Springs from Vegas a few times a year during the winter months since it is a pretty nice place to go and relax due to the golfing and day spas. The natural springs are also pretty cool. I would think that your wife would enjoy this place more than you. ! ! -


I am jealous of you since it has always been my dream of flying for America West and living in LAS certain times of the year.

I don't live in Vegas, but was very close to moving out there 2yrs ago and still have friends who live there. I agree with Jenga about Boulder City and Henderson. Henderson is where you will find some very reasonably priced apartments. Try driving up and down Green Valley Pkwy. and you'll see lots of apartments.

I'd stay away from Summerlin and far northwest Las Vegas, unless you want to pay quite a bit for an apartment. They are very nice areas, but are rather expensive.

First off, no offense to Rush, but you need to drive NORTH out of the city on I-15 to get to Craig Rd.

I don't live there now, but I just left there in July. I have spent almost six of the last 13 years living there on two assignments to Nellis AFB. We also plan to retire there out of the USAF in a few years. If you will fly out of Henderson Executive or LAS, you will want to look at new Henderson (89014/89074/89052) and old Henderson (89015). They are split by I-515. Lots of new apartment complexes all over town so there are lots of incentives (first month free, new washer/dryer combo, etc). You also want it to be close to where your new home is built, especially if you have kids.

I hate to say it, but I've never had a crispy cream. I've spent the last 5+ years on the east coast and have become a fan on Dunkin. I'll definitely try one though!

As much as I hate to commute, I'm going to do it for at least a year. I'm going to be based in ALB so hopefully the commute won't be too bad.

We're the number 1 US Express carrier in LGA now.. Boston too. (as far as # of daily departures)

We're bought the house in Summerlin. Very nice area, but expensive as far as apartments go.

Last time I was there I remember seeing some apartments 5-10 miles south east of the strip. They were right around the 15/215 split.. Looked like a decent place.

I would recommend Green Valley, as it is my favorite.
I lived there a few years ago while I flew the ditch. I also lived near Nellis, by Charleston and Nellis Blvd but I wouldn't recommend the location. I also lived by the North Las Vegas Airport and it isn't bad at all.
But Green Valley, Henderson and Summerlin are pretty sure bets.

Henderson is a great area. You might want to live, in the Green Valley part, that way you are near the airport, but yet you are outside the scum side.

I lived a couple of miles from the Sunset Station.

In 21 years you've seen that place go from nothing to everything.

I started visiting Vegas maybe 15 years ago when I was 14 or 15. I can't believe the changes that take place there every year. Hotels come.. some hotels go.. It's an amazing place to be, and I'll be able to call it home next month!!

Yeah, it's been quite a ride. I am orginally from San Diego, so I have seen two cities grow up, before my eyes.

The traffic here is becoming a real problem. Too many people in too small a space.

Hey Chperplt, just curious as to why you're moving to Vegas. I know you fly for Colgan (east coast) and was curious why you're relocating to Vegas. I think its cool though. If I had to be based on the east coast and could live out west, I would move out west ASAP.
