Exactly. Industry gets as much regulation as it deserves and company management gets as much union as it deserves.

Actually it does not always work this way; wall street melt down, gulf oil spill, airline over booking... But it should.

You want more jobs in this industry right? The airline ticket is the most highly taxed piece of paper in the world. Get the government to relax some of the insane taxes and you'll get more people flying and more jobs. The airlines can put a little more coin the account and they don't have to full 100% to ensure some profit.

think about the poor people

but what about the poor people, the 40% on some kind of gov't support? Where would the tax money come from to take care of the poor people? Besides rich people can afford those taxes. NOT!

I thought the taxes on airline tickets/operations were there to fund the benefits that the airlines themselves enjoy, things like: controlled airspace, FAA regulation, airport construction, security, etc.

It's still welfare of course...no reason the industry couldn't provide all of those services for itself (probably cheaper).

How about this novel idea, sell confirmed seats for only the number of seats on the airplane, and then sell 10% more refundable standby tickets.
