If you were a 22 year old pilot, with a Lear Jet type rating and had the following chances of employment:

1- Fly SIC in a Lear Jet under 135 (cargo) with a chance to upgrade in a year or so. Salary between 28K-32K a year, 10 days on 4 days off, full benefits.
2- Fly PIC in a EMB-110 for a cargo op, make 28k a year, full benefits, flying 4 or 5 days a weeks depending on the route.
3- Fly SIC in a Lear Jet under 135 (Air ambulance) no word on the upgrade time, 5 days on 2 days off, full benefits.
4- Fly PIC in a BE99, make 28K a year, full benefits, 5 day route, full benefits.

which one would you chose and why?

Fokkers,

Nice man, "The Dude abides," I love it!

no#1,no question about it.get some lear pic time so you want have to rot in an rj for 5 years making no money waitin for upgrade .if you play your cards right you could find yourself in a boeing, airbus,or md without a stop at a crappy regional.it worked for me.

I would choose #1 or #2, with the preference being for #1.

You're (or whoever) 22 years old, spending a year building SIC time in a Lear won't be a career stopper. In a year you'll be sitting left seat logging that golden PIC Jet time and getting full benefits and decent pay. The only thing I wouldn't be crazy about is the 10 on, 4 off schedule.

#2 would be okay as well. PIC Turbine time and the schedule 4-5 day a week schedule is attractive. However, 5 years from now I don't know that I would be content and happy with that job, especially with a Lear type already.

That's my .02

Just out of curiousity, for the emb110 would you have to have your atp certificate? If so your screwed because your 22 and in that case definitly the #1 choice so you get the lear PIC when you are 23.

I'd go for number 2!!! Is that Airnow by any chance? Who woul you be flying the BE99 for?

Yeah it's airnow. And the other company is freight runners...

Nope, I dont need an ATP for the emb110 job.

I agree, in number 1. I have a type in the darn plane, i love flying it but the schedule sux a$$ especially since I have a baby on the way. And yeah the emb110 gig is PIC turb right of the bat but will a major see the PIC tubo-prop time the same as PIC Jet?

Go for the PIC time. Last I checked, most majors have a PIC Turbine requirement not an SIC one.

I agree PIC turbine is golden, but since I'm typed in the airplane even if I fly as SIC once I manipulate the controls FARs state that I can log it as PIC. So one way or the other I can log PIC turb, but will lets say Southwest airlines rather see 1000 PIC in a Lear Jet or 1000 PIC in a Emb110????? Thats what's killing me, can I actually get a good job after flying PIC in a turboprop or am I going to have basically start over after I get the PIC turboprop time???

Southwest doesn't accept PIC per part 61 (sole manip). They only accept the part 1 definition - you're in control of the flight, signed for it, etc. etc.

Just an FYI.

As a data point, I know of a guy that went to SWA from a BE20 gig - no jet time. I can't say if jet PIC will help, but apparently turboprop PIC is not a deal breaker.

Oh, to be 22 again!

How many guys have had the "chance thing" dangled in front of them to keep them somewhere??? Hate the schedule.

2- Fly PIC in a EMB-110 for a cargo op, make 28k a year, full benefits, flying 4 or 5 days a weeks depending on the route.

Some airlines require your PIC turbine to be in an A/c over 20000 pounds, If you dream of a particular airline, You better check there minimums now (of course they could change tomorrow.)

3- Fly SIC in a Lear Jet under 135 (Air ambulance) no word on the upgrade time, 5 days on 2 days off, full benefits.

Benefits can sometimes outweigh additional pay, Being 22 years old, you probably are not worried about it, if you are single.

4- Fly PIC in a BE99, make 28K a year, full benefits, 5 day route, full benefits.

See Emb -110, But I'd take the 99 over it only because I flew them in the "Good OLd Days." I think I liked it only because it was my first "Real" flying job and how fun it was.
The night we ferried back empty and created the Vomit Comet, floating the Deadheaders in the back and them having a few too many beers and Potato chips, One guy filling up the potato chip bag and opening the hatch and throwing it out and the bag hung on the Tail and the "Soup" all over the side of the airplane. I hated cleaning that dang thing the next day but I'd do it all over again if given the chance. Ok somebody wake me up now!!!
That's the problem, Everyone's in such a hurry to get their hours, to get their first Airline Job, to Upgrade to Captain and then sit there forever waiting on a "real" Airline to call them, that they get miserable...Live life to the fullest, today could be your last.
Back to the Bene's....Don't get caught with your pants down on this one....I have seen too many guys get hung out to dry because they thought they were young and invincible or they could make until the Insurance kicked in at their new job....Don't take the chance, Enjoy yourself, Start planning for retirement now (on your own) and it won't matter how many places you worked that got sold , went out of business, Sold the company airplane whatever.

Good Luck!

Hmmm....interesting point, although I am not rushing to get the PIC turb just for an airline job, I am also considering corporate and even cargo for a career choice. All I am wondering is if I go and take the Emb110 or BE99 job once I get some decent PIC time in them, is it still possible to get a job flying PIC in a jet afterwards? I ask b/c usually Jet jobs are a bit higher paying. And like you said, I should start planning for retirement, and this is the reason why I am postion this. I'm 22, married and with a baby on the way, so I'm just trying to figure out what would be a better route.....I've only been flying for 3 1/2 years and I always like getting advice from you old timers.

3 1/2 years???? and you have a type in a LR and have 2000 hrs...ummm I guess you didn't go to school!!! And I guess that BIC pen works good for you! Just pick a **** job. There are alot of guys out here that would love to be in your shoes. I think that your full of it!! I dont think that you have 2K at 22 and I dont think that you have a type either. B/c if you had a type, then why would you not stay there and log PIC JET??

On the Aeroservice jobs fair a pilot from UPS was teaching how to pass on UPS's interview.
He said doesn't matter if it was turboprop, jet or even a broom as far it is Turbine. They want to see 1000 pic turbine not far 61. So It has to be your name on the Flight release as PIC.
BTW, SWA was there too and it is the same rule.
