I am considering a change from AT&T to verizon, where I can get just one bill and save some on my service "bundle".

My old Nokia 5165 TDMA phone doesn't have an equivalent in the verizon CDMA lineup.

So, which phone should I get? I know nothing about the other brands, and since I am new to verizon, they won't give me a free phone like AT&T has.

What do you recommend?

VERIZON WIRELESS IS PURE EVIL

They destroyed my perfect credit history because of their incompitance

The basic LG phone they sell works great. I don't know what model it is. This is one of the newer (I guess) gps compatible phones that provides enhanced 911 (position locating) service to cells.

The talk time is great, function is great, and I've been able to have a reasonably clear signal in some fairly remote places, so far...places where they don't even advertise a signal. After coming out of the ATT nightmare, and dealing with Sprint (who recently called and threatened to cancel my service, if I didn't pay for a phone I didn't have)...verizon has been great, so far.

the LG phone model is the LG 3100. This is the standard one you get when you sign up. it works great if you want a basic phone.

I've got the basic LG "flip phone" which works great. It broke a month after I got it, but Verizon replaced with no hassels or cost.

MarineGrunt -- We'd love to hear that story!!

There are several Samsung and LG flip phones.

A friend has the samsung A 310, which gets warm when you use it (UND pilots take note) and I have read good and bad on the LG phone.

I'm looking for more opinions as to which "currently available" phone is best. No PDA's or blackberrys, and I don't want to take pictures.

Any more help?

Two years ago, when I was more broke than I am now, I went down the cheap road and got a $19.99 Motorola. I had it for two weeks and swore that I would never buy a cheap phone again; the volume was terrible, the phone was uncomfortable to hold, battery life seemed weak.

I traded the $19.99 phone in for a more expensive LG TM510 and have been very pleased with its operation since (the model is no longer offered from Verizon).

You get what you pay for, don't go cheap! You will pay for it later if you do.

Good luck

I've had the Motorola T720 with Verizon for a year. Good phone, but the color screen sucks the (standard) battery down fairly quickly. I average maybe 30-40 minutes a day and I have to recharge just about every other day. It does have high quality polyphonic ring tones if you like those kinds of bells and whistles. I think I'm going to go back to the standard LG phone when I renew. I don't need or use most of the features on the T720. (The T730 is the newer version that Verizon offers)

My recommendation is the LG VX4400 over the 3100, if you can afford it. The most important reason is that the 4400 still offers Analog capability, while the 3100 doesn't. While it's becoming less important, there are areas where you won't have any service at all without it. Northern Maine is one example -- there's TDMA and analog up there. Unless your phone speaks one or the other, it won't be able to make any calls. Lots of rural areas fall under that category.

Eventually it's not going to be a factor for me, but right now, I still run into areas where I need analog. When that changes, I might consider a digital-only phone. Of the analog-capable phones out there, I think the 4400 is the best one Verizon offers at the moment in terms of call performance and sound quality. The ringers on it are pretty bad, but it's otherwise such a great phone I'm willing to overlook it.

The 3100 also doesn't have an external LCD display, so you have to flip it open to see who's calling. That would annoy me; maybe not you. Just a consideration.

The 4400's battery is good for maybe two days; I get 4-5 days with the extended battery I bought for it. It has better battery life than the Motorola 720/730, but not by a whole heck of a lot.

I think you'll like Verizon. I switched to them from AT&T when I moved to New England, as their TDMA service was just too spotty. (The thing wouldn't even ring in Connecticut!)

Good luck.
