I dont know about who is the biggest tool on this webboard. But while on the eastern arrival into DTW yesterday, I heard this:

TRACON: NWA XXX expect ILS 21L
NWA: 21L, and we'd like to put our request in for 22R
TRACON: well, we're out to 30 mile finals on both sides
NWA: we'd really like 22R if you can get it...then we don't need 4 wheel drive
TRACON: say again?
NWA: we'd like 22R because it is a smoother runway

The best part was that he not only had this conversation with the initial approach controller, but when we were handed of to our final approach controller, he made the same request again.

Now, I am used to hearing NWA guys ask for "wind checks" (even if it's 10kts or less) and my all time favorite "how long's the final?". But this smoother runway request is a new one.

In his defense, you've gotta admit that 21L is terrible. I don't even bother trying for a smooth landing on it because the pax are just going to get the crap beat out of them anyway on the rollout. Why did they have the thing closed for construction last year anyway if they weren't going to smooth it out?

You may think he's a tool, but compare your W2 to his sometime!!! In the end that's whats really important!

W2 doesn't mean squat. I bet there are some 747 captains that have less money left over at the end of the month than I do, an RJ pilot. If you are going to compare W2's make sure to include ex-wives and child support payments.

Believe it or not, you can still be living paycheck to paycheck even if you make 100K, 200K... a year.

How long's the final? LOL. I thought I was the only one that thought that was funny in DTW. I always thought that the answer led to some kind of amazing calculation that was going on in those NW birds.

In your infinite wisdom, please explain to me how the amount on one's W2 has anything to do with my post. I guess when I make a lot of money and become truely happy, I'll understand runway smoothness and why the length of the final is very important.

For that matter, I must be an unhappy person. I fly for a regional. I also fly a Saab, so every runway feels like I'm off-roadin'.

Another example of how wise one is when you make a lot of money.

This happened 2 mornings ago and I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't heard that dumb__s myself. But he did know to ask for 36L since it is smoother. And he is happy. He makes more money than I. His wives and girlfriends also spend more of his money than mine does.

I don't see what is so bizzare about asking "how long is the final." It can make a huge difference with how quick you need to dirty the thing up and slow down if you are looking at a 7 mile final versus a 25 mile final. Fuel is pricey these days.
