Where would a UAL/CAL merger leave the pilots?

IMHO, I have been though mergers and have watched many occour as we all have. I have not seen one of the major signs that usually signals a merger is ripe. HIRING. Generally, both companies suspend all hiring when a merger is imminent. Just my observation.

Back in the 80's USair was hiring continuously through the various mergers that occured with Piedmont and PSA. At some point during the transitions USAir was hiring and placing the pilots at either PI or PSA depending on needs within the class.

Thats interesting

I am not an expert on this but the hiring freeze seems to be a tel-tale indication when a merger is going to take place. I am sure there are exceptions.

Come on 8 yr UAL guy swinging gear for 3 year CAL guy. Who has the strongest MEC wins.

Gotta love the "swinging gear" comments whenever a merger idea is entertained. Gee....who pulls the gear when it is the 8 yr UAL guys leg?

He who has the "strongest MEC" doesn't necessarily mean he will gain in the merger. Which ever group can afford ( via assements) the best representation ( attorney) to argue their case in front of the arbitrator, keeping his arguements within the confines of the ALPA merger Policy, will "win".

Dan Katz is one of many attorney's that make big money off labor groups in mergers. Don't have to like it....but thats the way it is done. Just make sure your group retains Dan Katz first.

Has anyone considered UAL or CAL buying a LCC as a separate part the overall company?

They may try to emulate the famous whipsaw of the labor groups that is going on at World/North American or Atlas/Polar. Kinda like what they try to do with regionals.

What kind of scope does UAL or CAL have? Will it apply?

The airline that does the buying wins. Period. If UAL buys us, we get screwed. If we buy them, they get screwed. Anyone who thinks that any shred of ALPA union brotherhood would exist during this, or any, merger is smoking some serious crack.

Anyone who scabbed should be stabled as a starter. Then we can talk from there.

Let's hope this whole deal never happens.

PK, your full of SH*T and let me tell you why! Actually your only partly full. I personally think that we get hosed either way because UAL guys will run the show regardless of what side of the transaction they are on.

And you know how it goes from there; the fair haired, articulate spokesman talks about how the only fair outcome is to make sure all of his personal needs (and maybe serenedipitously his pilot group, but only after his needs) are met at the expense of everyone else.

Been there, done that, walk with a cane, and have to sit down every time I pee.

?????, there a winery in MO that makes an excellent wine by that name.

I thought you were going to say that you can no longer feel it when you poop, due to ALPA's excellent representation during our other merger.
