Depends what you're looking for. If you're flying into Centennial (APA) there are a multitude of decent (although mostly chain) restaurants, hotels/motels, health clubs, and movie theaters fairly close to the airport. No matter which of the 4 airports you fly into, downtown Denver (which of course has the most overall activities) is a bit of a trek.

If your flying into Denver International Airport theres lost of hotels probably 5 miles away off of tower road, downtown Denver is probably a 35 min drive depending on traffic. If your flying into Jeffco/BJC theres a huge mall/business park right there called Interlocken, but Denver is a good 35-40 minute drive. If you have the money stay in a hotel in downtown Denver, lots to see/do on 16th street mall. Theres quite a few Denverites on this board like myself so hopefully we can come up with a good answer.

We're flying into DEN and money isn't that big a deal ($100-150/night is fine)... we're mainly looking for a decent place that's in a nice area where we can get a good dinner...find a few beers somewhere close... and a good lunch. It's a late departure too, so we don't mind driving downtown if that's a fun area.

Denver is the only downtown Ive ever really been to so I cant compare it to other cities but its fun, I go down there whenever a friend visits from out of town. Lots of good bars, hit the ESPN zone, near Lodo, good bar and really fun place to go. Go out at night and observe all the freaks to, they are always good for a laugh.

Off topic: Go Broncos kill KC! (Im leaving for the game in 20 mins)

Hands down the Brown Palace is where I stay in Denver.

If you can afford to stay where the President sleeps when he comes to town, why not? They give discounts to airline employees and with a little shopping you can get into an affordable suite. It is a pleasant experience you and the Mrs' will not soon forget.

If you have the time, the drive up to Aspen is nice and don't forget the Great American Beer Festival. ( Drink tastes of $1,000 bottles of collector's beer for $5 admission fee - the best deal on the planet. The brewers come to Denver to compete for the World Beer Cup. Sweetwater from Atlanta usually does well in the competition. )
