Where to rent airplane out of NYC?

Will be in NYC(Times Square) all of next month and some in the fall. Would like to keep current and fly every few weeks. Any recommendations on where to rent (with flight instructor if required) that is easily accessible? Any help would be appreciated!

I dont think that you will be able to rent in the city itself. The best bet for you will be to use the LIRR and go out to FRG or somewhere else in Long Island. The other thing you could do is go to HPN, they also have flight schools there. Good Luck

Yep. Take the LIRR out to Farmingdale and go to Farmingdale/Republic Airport. Only five minutes from the station (after about an hour train).

HPN is doable, but you will need to take a much longer cab ride to the airport from the nearest train, and it is typically more expensive to rent from there, too.

If you have a CAR at your disposal, Teterboro may be closer for you, but I have no experience with the rental outfits there.

There's a flight school adjacent to MillionAir in TEB. Go to the Port Authority Terminal, and take the NJ Transit bus to Teterboro. From the bus stop, it's less than a mile walk to MillionAir, and the bus is reasonably priced (less than $5 each way).

Can't speak to the quality of the flight school as I've never been a customer, but I'd venture to guess it's the most easily accessible location in the area from midtown Manhattan.

At any of the airports around the city (FRG, ISP, TEB, MMU and others) you'll just wind up getting gouged for a 172 and stuck this a foreign instructor hardly able to speak english.

I grew up flying on the PA/NJ border just outside NYC. If you have a car I'd recommend heading out to Van Sant (9N1) on the Delaware River in PA. Its about 1.5 hours by car.

Outside of Van Sant there is also Andover (12N) in northern NJ. They do cubs, supercubs and Huskies. Alittle pricey but good. PM me if you need any more info. If you go to Van Sant let me know, I'll give you some tips on good places to fly to.

Hmmm, myself and every instructor I ever worked with or met at FRG were fluent in this country's predominant language...

Unless there's been a startling influx of foreigners in central Long Island in the last three years, I think I can say with some confidence that you would do fine at FRG or ISP (though I don't know why you'd go all the way out to Islip when Farmingdale is much, much closer).

Now as for the rental rates on a 172... "Gouged" is not an incorrect assessment. Like I said, anywhere in the NYC area is going to be expensive, especially since their insurance went up even more quickly than the Twin Towers went down. I think that Nassau Flyers will get you for $85/hr in a 172, but they have 152's and 4 types of Piper singles to choose from, too.

In any case, if you don't have a car, Pennsylvania is out. If you DO, it's your choice if you want to drive twice as far as any of the airports local to NYC to save a few dollars on rental fees (instead spending that money on gas, and depending upon how you get to Bucks County, tolls too).

My opinion

Go to DXR ( Danbury Conn.) ) to arrow aviation rent a c-152, c-172 or pa-18 for a reasonable price The rides about an hour but more bang for your buck and nice people!Great scenery too.

Ya know? That's not a bad idea. Danbury is a much nicer drive than anything mentioned so far. The only catch is that from midtown it's probably just as far as the airports in PA... I think that "about an hour" understates it slightly.

There is some really nice flying around there and heading north, too. Used to have a nice brewery/restaurant on the field in Danbury... Nice place to end your day, if its' still there!

The restaurant is still at DXR. You have 3 or 4 FBOs to choose from there; I rent from Danbury Flight School and pay 65 for a 152, and anywhere from 79-105 for a 172 depending on model. They also have some PA-28s and a Cherokee six. The twin is a Seneca, but the insurance requirement is high. Schedualing is online and i've never had a problem booking a plane, even on the 4th of July weekend. Watch out for the approaches into 26 and 35 though (particularly 35 with the noise abatement procedure)

DXR- Danbury Airport is realistically 1 hour 15 mins. as long as your not coming around the afternoon rushour out of the city. Danbury Flight School has better airplanes than others on the field and is priced the same. You can rent on your own or get one of their many great instructors to show you around. A bit closer is HPN - Westchester County about 20 mins closer to NYC than DXR. You will spend a lot of time on the ground waiting in line with the commuters that fly in and out of there. American Flyers and Panorama are there...they are flight schools, not sure if they rent.

As for TEB - Teterboro.... forget it if you are training or not used to VERY busy airports. It is primarily a business aircraft, charter airport and arguably busier than JFK, LGA or Newark. Doubt they even have a rental facility there.

Long Island airports can take you forever to get to with the 24/7 traffic on the L.I.E. but by train wouldn't be a bad bet, it's up to you for the transportation from the train to the airport though.
