My passengers have business in downtown Boston - looks like KBED, KOWD, and KBVY are all roughly about the same distance out on a map. Looking for input from folks who fly there regularly (we haven't been there in many years) - traffic/road issues, expenses, etc. Coming from the southeast in a Citation I.

I figure that they stick it to you at Logan ($6.76/gal for one thing), but are the useage/landing fees as prohibitivelly high as I imagine they are also? Anyone use Logan on a regular basis? You cetainly can't beat it's location.

Thanks in advance.

We've used both BED and BOS, but one cant beat BOS for its proximity to the city. Sure they charge you both arms and both legs at Signature but hey, they do that everywhere. Getting in and out of BOS always relatively easy ATC wise (except in bad weather), BED could always be the backup plan. Remember, pax convenience is our job:D

We use Jet aviation at BED, but have used BOS in the past. Travel from BED is about 20 minutes to Downtown.

Fokkerflyer is right about Signature BOS. Be prepared to leave both arms and legs behind.

Kbos

The fees amount to over $800 on a DA2000EX inclusive of government landing and parking fees. It is still cheaper to tanker fuel and pay the Signature fees considering the high fuel price.

Having said that I agree that in our world time IS money. We choose to suck it up and the passengers agree.

Signature is a joke. At KMMU the other night we paid $525 for basically a ride to dinner, a nasty attitude behind the desk, and two line guys playing on the internet and sleeping in the pilot's lounge as I pulled the chocks, moved the cone and taxied out with no marshalling. We didn't buy fuel so I understand the handling charge and will pay it no problem. JUST DO YOUR JOB SIGNATURE!!!

By the way Boston Tower, Tracon and Center controllers are awesome!!! New York Center should take some lessons!

LWM (Lawrence, MA) is also in the running with BED, OWD, and BVY. LWM has great service and cheap fuel at Eagle East Aviation.

I have to agree with Fokkerflyer here.. I always choose the quickest and easiest transportation for the passengers. A trip from BED could be 20 mins or it could be 2 hours. If money really was an issue they would be flying into BOS on an airline instead of the Corp Jet. High fees and extortion fuel prices are cheap when you get the phone call from the Boss all pissed off because they left downtown during rush hour and sit in the back of a sedan for hours.
Besides... it is not like you are really paying that bill anyway.. right???

Uh, yeah...right.

That's why flight departments eventually shutdown, attitudes like this.

You should still have a good, efficient, common sense attitude when it comes to finding cheaper ways to operate the airplane(s). Not to just flop down your credit card to pay for retail fuel when contract fuel is $1.50/gal cheaper.

Your "current position" says it all about your attitude.....

Nice... Always a hater in the group....

The current position was actually from my former position...

There are plenty of other ways to save money within a flight department than to inconvienence your owner by landing at the cheap but inconvienient location. If you frequent any area I have easily negotiated cheaper fuel rates than any contract card. And yes we do have all the contract cards..

If a flight department is going to shut down because of under $1000 in fees and increased fuel rates...hate to tell ya but that job isn't going to last long anyway..and the plane is likely pictured in this months "Controller".
I just signed for a bill to replace 1 tire that was $1000. It takes money to make money...
If they only use the plane for pleasure then and only then would I worry. We are 99% business trips only.

Besides the comment was more directed if I were to be flying my own plane into the area-then yea I would choose the cheapest fuel and fee airport in beantown. But I am not and the Boss's time is better spent elsewhere than sitting in the back of a sedan.

Ok, well said. I'm not a hater at all but I've seen way too many of these "attitudes" and then they're wondering a year later why the flight dept shutdown.

I haven't had that happen yet, luckily. I'm at a two-aircraft Fortune 500 operation now and still operate in an efficient manner. I'm a believer in not just throwing money around because my company can afford to. We don't deviate to a different airport just to save a few cents on fuel, but we do look into contract fuel options where we go.

By the way, both airplanes are flown for business purposes only.

We track OUR fuel prices vs. retail prices and so far this year we've saved over $90K!

Sorry to highjack the thread....BOS Signature sucks, as do most other Signatures.

Wrong, a bit, "most other Signatures" ... should read "ALL OTHER SIGNATURE STATIONS EXCEPT AUSTIN, BUT THEY SOLD THAT!"

BED to the cty is closer to 30 minutes. If you fly into OWD, you'll save about $400 over Signature at BOS although as everyone said, if it's for convenience, BOS can't be beat; 10 minutes to downtown at most.

OWD is about 30 minutes to the city, same as BED. BVY isn't bad but lousy service. Not even a crew car. BTW, only BED and BOS have ILS's. The others have non-precisions. I'd call around if I were you.

Mr. I.

Give the pax a choice. Can you call the PA or secretary and tell them it's going to be a half hour ride or a mortgage payment? Let them decide. TC

Bedford is the better choice in my opinion. Boston can be very convenient if all is well. However it doesn't take much to start the delays. Strong winds are enough to do it. It takes about 30 minutes to drive to Bedford from downtown and it will probably take 10-15 minutes to get to Signature Logan from downtown where the passengers have to go through security at Signature and then to the plane. At Bedford they will drive up to the plane, walk up the stairs, and taxi for 5 minutes. Taxi times are longer at Logan most of the time if for no other reason than it is bigger and more complex. Road traffic will add time to go to either airport. The limo drivers know the best ways to deal with traffic between Bedford and downtown. I think under good circumstances time from downtown to takeoff won't be much different if you use Logan or Bedford, but if things are bad Bedford will trounce Logan. Of course, there are days when road traffic will make you want to pull your hair out but Bedford gets my vote.

I forgot to add:

Explain all of the time factors for both airports(driving taxiing, possible weather and volume delays), noting that Bedford might add a few minutes, but it could potentially save hours. Then let the passengers make the decision.

LWM is actually in North Andover, MA. It's a very nice town, I know, I grew up there.
I apologize for offending you and the town of North Andover. But Lawrence is still a s-h-i-t-hole! And probably the farthest away of all the satellite airports listed for the original posters issue.

Mr. I.

I always let the passengers decide which suitable airport to go into (and I decide what is suitable for the airplane). I price everything associated with the trip, all the options available, and let them decide. It is our job to determine and present all possible safe options, no matter how expensive. If someone is operating a corporate jet, then it should be obvious that they value their time greatly and the closest airport may make more sense to them than the cheapest.

That being said, I appreciate the information - this is what I was looking for.
