The hornets are attacking each other domestically because they are running out of places to put aircraft... I am sure AA will retaliate with new random flights into MSP or DTW. I guess the airlines are looking for relatively non-competitive routes where you have one primary choice (AA in this case between those two cities). But won't that result in a fare war that could hurt both airlines (AA wants to protect its turf). Just seems like an interesting choice - NWA is picking a fight with AA...

Northwest Airlines Announces New Nonstop Service between Dallas and New York
Friday June 15, 10:40 am ET

Three daily weekday, two daily weekend flights to start Sept. 5

EAGAN, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Northwest Airlines (NYSE:NWA - News) today announced new service between Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and New York's LaGuardia International Airport (LGA) beginning Sept. 5, 2007.

"We are pleased to offer these new nonstop frequencies between Dallas and New York's LaGuardia airport. Business travelers in particular will appreciate the conveniently timed morning, afternoon and evening flights," said Tom Bach, vice president of network planning & revenue management.

Northwest Airlines is one of the world's largest airlines with hubs at Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Memphis, Tokyo and Amsterdam, and approximately 1,400 daily departures. Northwest is a member of SkyTeam, an airline alliance that offers customers one of the world's most extensive global networks. Northwest and its travel partners serve more than 900 cities in excess of 160 countries on six continents.

AA Announced this LGA-MSP service a few days before NWA countered with the LGA-DFW service. I think both of these carriers are just trying to offer options for their respective frequent fliers. I doubt there will be any fare wars between legacy carriers. Both of these markets can support the additional flights without noticing a difference.
