When will the majors ..

When will the majors begin hiring off the street again? I would like to work for Continental. Does anyone know what's projected? It would be a few years before I'm ready for the majors, if I'm lucky.

More than likely a long, long time.. there are thousands of pilots out of work on furlough... No one has that crystal ball...

And once hiring does begin "off the street" just think of all those guys who will have spent the last 7-10 years at the regionals building all that quality time... Competitive times will be VERY high for a long time to come...

Who's to say they will leave? They may be content with where they are, sched/pay.

If anyone can accurately predict this stuff, then I want to go to Vegas for a weekend with that person. Just tell me which dice table is going to have a hot roll!

However, if I were to take a WAG... I'd put my money on the furloughs lasting for at least 5 years, possibly up to 7 or 8. Then things may pick up a bit, but there wil never be a "pilot shortage." Regardless of what Kit "Snake Oil Salesman" Darby says. By then the software engineers will have built the pilotless transport category airplanes... and so we'll go the way of the Mississippi River steamboat pilots. Make sure you have a backup plan.

I don't mean to sound overly pessimistic, but be pragmatic when it comes to things like getting your education and having some other skill you can fall back on.

I dare to be a little enthusiastic and say up to 3 years before the recalls begin. 2 more until everyone is recalled and the interviews start. So 2007 is where I'd expect to see the big majors interviewing.

There are many variables, but I'd say it'll be awhile before everyone is recalled and back to work.

I hate to say it...

I must point out that majors are hiring off the street as we speak. I realize that many are caught up in nasty and potentially lengthy furloughs, but there are still airlines hiring out there, including some majors. It changes day to day, but Fed Ex has hired quite steadily this year and there are others. It is not TOTAL doom and gloom out there.

It's **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** near doom and gloom. So one major is hiring...That's not good. Even SWA has slowed considerably. We are in a very bad time. Guys getting picked up right now have every right to be optimistic and happy. From an industry standpoint, however, what we're going through right now is not good for anybody. Future contracts, pay scales, benefits, etc. will be affected for years to come regardless of who you're flying for. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security. If the majors go down, it'll impact industry-wide.

Several hiring, small numbers

There are a few majors (Fedex, America West, ATA, Alaska) as well as some not-quite-majors (JetBlue, Air Tran, Aloha) interviewing/hiring. The numbers of pilots that they are hiring is relatively small so the pain level still remains very high for a majority of pilots. Outside looking in FEELS a whole lot different than inside looking out.
