When did the 40 hours minimum for Private come about?

Student Pilot rating? Private Pilot rating? That doesn't sound familiar, but I do remember that you used to be an ATR (Air Transport rating) instead of an ATP. What year did the FAA replace the CAA? 1950 something? Perhaps that was when the changes occurred. Perhaps this is something that Jafe might know. Like I said in a previous post, I learned to fly in 1966 and by then things were pretty much as they are now.

THe Solo pilot rating required 5 hours of solo time, 3 hours within hte last 60 day of the application for the rating. THere were no geographical restriction on solo flight, but you still couldn't carry passengers.
