What's the going rate for instructors?

Wow with the rates that you guys charge, I would have never been able to afford to learn how to fly.
 
This is a little off the basic question but if the range of rates you all list are the current going rate for primary instruction, what are the rates for.:

Instrument instruction?

Twin-engine instruction?

If anyone would like to throw in examiner fees for the

Private

Commercial

Instrument

Multi-engine

ATP

I'd be grateful for the info. Thanks for any help.

The schools here in the northeast with exceptions, charge the same rate for all ratings 40-50/hr. Checkrides for all ratings are running 220/hr - 250/hr, depends on who the examiner is.

No offense, but this is my point. This is why most flight instructors can't/won't charge what they are worth - because they are concerned with the student's pocketbook. And I understand this.

However, If you happened to notice in a previous post that I "seek out" professional folks that ALSO charge upwards of $50 to $100/ hr for THEIR profession! These folks won't balk at the thought of paying a professional rate to a professional. As a matter of fact, high dollar folks (for this example) would view a "low rate CFI" as someone that gives "low rate" instruction.

There was an article out about martial arts schools and in the article the marketer stated that folks tended to go to the higher charging schools because of the perception that money buys professionalism and that the low-charging schools didn't think any higher of themselves than to chage LOW RENT!

POINT OF INTEREST: I used to skydive, scuba, etc. Well, you can pay upwards of $3500 to $6000 for high quality gear if you outfitted with new stuff. These low'charging CFI's don't understand that these same folks that they are worrying about charging full rate to would/could simply go and spend that same money on bungi-gear, snow mobiles, etc.....

Hey, I don't learn to golf because I don't wanna pay $75 for 1/2 hour lessons with a "pro". So, I don't golf!
 
I'm a private for $35/hr, $45 for advanced (Instrument, comm, multi) although I don't get much multi freelance and usually only do it when getting remedial students from the local FBO.

Our local DE charges $250 for the Private Ride and $350 for all other ratings. He thinks the same way as Toy Soldier - i.e. he is a professional and he will charge accordingly.

Training a primary in a P-210 - Yeah, what a hoot. Those first few landings, stall series, engine out procedures, etc, etc. The military has the budget and a different training curriculum to apply to their training. They may have turbo-charged aircraft but nothing as touchy as our general aviation stuff. The INSTRUCTOR trying to teach a novice pilot in a P-210 will have his hands full.

Teach a primary student in a turbo-charged anything - I'd decline the offer - I've already had one engine failure due to a turbo-charger eating itself - if you think I want to be up there yanking controls and banking and shock cooling a tempermental engine, you're nuts. The money is only part of the equation - kind of a shame to see a P-210 ripped to shreads by somebody who doesn't give a darn.
 
Wow!! i wish i was making that kind of money flight instructing, i make $10 an hour in Daytona Beach, and the "employer" keeps the other $10
