regular ATM from major bank

use your regular ATM card to get cash

VISA credit card is pretty well accepted everywhere also

the credit card processor by default will process the payment at the best available exchange rate they are giving you

ATM card for cash out of ATM is the absolute best exchange rate, far better than those money exchange windows at the airport

Save your $$$

The best credit card that won't screw you over with exchange fees is usually a credit union card. Almost every bank charges 2% foreign transaction fees; Wings financial (airline employee credit union) does not on their Visa card and sure by their nature, most credit unions are the same. Note also, I do not use a check card, this is a Visa credit card from Wings financial. Reason being I never use a check card is because it seems more of a hassle to get money back taken out of a checking account from fraud or theft, then money that's just been charged.

The one you stole from some French tourists .....

Use VISA or better still use your ATM card. Both will give yo the exact exchange rate for that day. Business usually round the exchange rate in their favor and most foriegn business (especially European businesses) charge a sur charge when you use a card so you pay even more. Go to an ATM and use cash.

Dean Wermer from Animal House....classic!!!!!

I would go with the ATM card, Cash is king. Plus what your credit card company won't tell you is that they charge a service charge for international transactions.. I never really noticed until I bought my wife a bracelet in Dubai, and they tacked an extra 70 bucks...

Amex are great when it comes to a dispute with a vendor. I`ve had a few run-ins with car rental companies abroad trying to rip me off and Amex are superb when it comes to backing you up. In my experience Visa/Mastercard leave you to the wolves! Amex have great auto-rental insurance and warrenty extension plans for free and if you make arrangements with them you can use the card as an ATM cash card. Not accepted everywhere though!

VISA doesn't charge trasaction fees.

Visa doesn't, but the banks charge 2% conversion fees like Bank of America, MBNA, Chase, etc.

I carry an Amex travel funds card. Basically a prepaid credit card - not attached to any accounts back home. Accepted in 99% of the places I have been.
