Ah yes, any Barney Fife with a badge can carry a weapon on board a plane, but the FFDO's have to get a letter from the president and tote it around in a portable safe. After being strip searched for his nail clippers of course.

Do air marshals have a rule that is equivalent to our "bottle to throttle" rule?
FAM's are not allowed to drink while armed. I don't know of any specific hour requirement, but they are not to "be under the influence of drugs or alcohol" while on duty.

How can you be an "on duty" FAM in a saloon?

I think it's funny how the media jumps on this story and when we read it, we picture some furloghed airline pilot who had to take a job as a FAM, sitting at some table in a saloon passed out drunk while getting mugged. Stopping after work and having a few drinks at a saloon is not against the law in this country yet and nobody has yet to say that the FAM was packing the gear when the gear got stolen. IF the gear was stolen out of the locked trunk of the FAM's car or out of a locked locker or from a locked private room at the saloon...then other crimes have occured and the FAM might not on the hook.

This story is incomplete. Who knows, maybe the FAM left his goodies in a brown paper bag on the bar when he got up to go pass out in the mens room?

I don't have a horse in this race, but I'd like to thank you for the Peter Frampton flashback.

... and for spelling 'loses' properly.
