We all need to participate in a grassroots effort to continue showing support for this legislation. It is important that we all participate by writing our Congressman and Senators on behalf of our already retired, and soon to retire, fellow pilots that continue to receive less than they should from the PBGC. It is very simple to participate. Click on the links below and send your message to your legislators in D.C.

Letter to Senators Concerning S. 1270
Letter to House Member Concerning H.R. 2103
For more information, see your MEC website at www.alpa.org
Thank you for your help in this important effort.

FAMILY MEDICAL LEAVE ACT
The Family Medical Leave Act would be modified by H.R. 2744 and S. 2059 to recognize that Pilots and Flight Attendants are entitled to the benefits in this act, even though we do not work a standard 40 hour week. Current law requires that an employee work at least 60% of a normal workweek of 40 hours. ALPA and AFA will be coordinating efforts on this legislation.

LOST RETIREMENT SAVINGS ACT OF 2007
During the week of November 12 through 16, your MEC Legislative Committee, in concert with the Delta MEC Legislative Affairs Committee, visited many members of the House of Representatives, in an effort to promote HR4061, The Lost Retirement Savings Act of 2007.

This bill would allow members of our group an option to claim a refund of taxes paid on money received in excess of the IRS 415 limit, from the bond distribution and the stock sale, as a direct result of the bankruptcy process, to be rolled over into an IRA. This bill was introduced in the House of Representatives earlier in the month. The Senate version will be introduced soon.

This has a long way to go before becoming law and there will be opportunities for all pilots to solicit congressional support, via a grassroots campaign.

This bill has bi-cameral and bi-partisan support. The Congressmen and Staff visited were all very receptive to this bill, and there was no opposition to it. We will keep you updated as to the progress of this legislation. Your Legislative Committee intends to continue visiting Capitol Hill in December, once the Senate version has been introduced.

As you can see, in this report alone, your Legislative Committee is working on your behalf on legislation that will put actual dollars in your pocket, and/or improve your quality of life, and ability to care for your family.

We are in need of increased participation in our ALPA PAC and UP PAC! I thank those of you that are contributors for recognizing the need and value of our PACs. Those of you that are not contributors, I implore you to become engaged in our political process. The PACs benefit ALL pilots, yet only 31% of your fellow pilots are carrying the financial load. I ask you to share in this commitment and sign up for UP PAC and ALPA PAC today.

Thank you for your participation in our profession and industry’s business.

"It is not the function of the government to keep the citizen from falling into error; it is the function of the citizen to keep the government from falling into error."
