Re: the AmWest pilots....they won their appeal and the state charges in Florida were dropped.

The State of Florida didn't get their piece, but pilots everywhere won a major victory in that the federal court said that states do not reserve the right to regulate aviation activities.

I don't know what the Feds did to them.

I am not sure how pilots won in this ruling. Yes, the State of Florida was ruled against from their ability to arrest a drunken pilot under the statutes that relate to driving a motor vehicle drunk.

Nevertheless, the violation cost them their careers and self respect. Seems like a stiff penalty to me.

I would not say it is over until the fat lady sings. Never say never in this business, remember the NWA crew that was arrested and the captain spent jail time, tickets revoked, etc, etc,. He was able to get back into the cockpit and retire as a NWA pilot. I think you may be a little surprised done the line.

I did the CNN coverage for this incident, not going to be surprised.

The first time I even heard about this I said that it was a Jimmy Buffet, somewhere there is a woman to blame.

The Northwest crew did what you said. Now tell me that they did not pay a price for their episode because the guy was allowed to come back and retire. Call him and ask him if he suffered an appropriate penalty.

No son, daddy will not be flying for awhile because he got drunk as a skunk chasing some women in a bar. It is not much of a penalty because ---well I'll tell you when I get out of this jail.

The victory here is that states, counties, cities, townships, HOAs, and whatever other political subdivision that happens to exist can't pass or enforce laws that regulate operation of aircraft. Enforcement and regulation is bestowed only on the federal government.

Can you image how impossible it would be to try to follow the laws passed by every two-bit city council while flying? This is without question a victory for aviation.
