What happened to the NPRM for age 65?

Blakely left last Thursday and I did not hear that she issued an NPRM to change the age 60 to 65 rule. Does this mean now the only chance that the geezers have is through congress and the house or do we know if the person who replaces Blakely will be sympethetic to the geezers? Andy any thoughts?

I think that the NPRM you refer to will not be ready for another year or so.

The FAA won't issue an NPRM until congress provides litigation protection. If an NPRM was issued and the age limit changed without any protection from litigation, then every airline, not to mention the unions, would be deluged with lawsuits from angry geezers wanting their jobs back with seniority. Because of that, the FAA has been waiting for congress to provide that protection. So, don't expect this to happen through NPRM.

It looks like there won't be any NPRM from the FAA to change age 60. There may be some backers of an NPRM in the FAA, but I'd be surprised if a new Administrator pushes for an NPRM to change age 60.

As far as any age change, it's now completely up to Congress. I don't see any quick passage of the FAA Reauthorization Bill, so any change to age 60 is unlikely before the next session of Congress, as Congress is starting to shift emphasis to the next presidential election. You can pretty much forget about much getting done in Congress before then.

It will likely take a VERY long while. From what I've heard (from the ALPA lobbyist), it's not in any airline management's planning factors right now. It may pass eventually, but probably not for several years.

A common thought around here is that FedEx hiring came to a screeching halt in anticipation of the age 65 "thing" passing. Any guesses as to how long they can hold out before resuming hiring?

I believe the bill already passed the House, not the Senate. GW said he will veto the House version, because it helps out labor, specifically FAA controllers.

There are a LOT more issues in the bill than FAA controller compensation. GW will veto any form of this bill crossing his desk. While there appears to be enough votes to override, I doubt that it will be overridden, since GW's main complaint is that it's over budget.

There have been attempts to have a vote on the age issue separately, but it's been blocked and will not be a standalone bill.

The very earliest date that this could possibly pass is 2009.

Mooseflyer, I'm not familiar with FedEx's hiring freeze. The age 65 thing may have played a factor in it, but I would imagine that they'd also be looking at parking less fuel efficient aircraft. Like the 727. Parking the 727 would allow FedEx to replace those aircraft with 2 pilot aircraft, reducing hiring needs.
There are probably a myriad of reasons as to why FedEx has stopped hiring, not just because of the possibility of age 65.
