Whiz wheel.....too easy to use to worry about batteries dying and having to buy new ones.

For me anyway.

Of course....the GPS is nice too.

*edit*
To add to this...what Lead said is right on (see below). I use the laptop for planning the flight initially. I may use the whiz wheel to figure out actual ground speed unless I can otherwise figure it out (GPS/DME) and/or descent rates, TOD, etc. unless there's another way (like the GPS, DME, etc.). Actual flight planning...........I think the last one I did was my Commercial SE....no...the laptop did that too. It was my instrument checkride. But anyway, whizwheel.

What flight computer do you prefer? Why?

Whizz Wheel or Electronic
I hate to say it, but I haven't used a flight computer - electronic or otherwise - in 20 years. Well, that's not quite true - we break them out during our International Procedures Recurrent Courses for oceanic planning review.

The main purpose of flight computers now days is probably to pass the FAA knowledge exams and check rides. Out in the real world computerized flight planning is widely available.

I've been carrying a CR-5 in my pocket for over 20 years...Don't use it as much as I used to, but still use it enough not to stop carrying it.

Fly safe!
