I need to get a flashlight, because none of the lights (panel/overhead/flood) seem to work in the airplanes I fly. I do most of my hood work at night due to work and other things, with a buddy of mine (also a pilot).

So, I've been thinking of getting this bad boy here:

Doesn't need battery (good), waterproof (good too, I guess, for camping), LED (very good, long lasting), but a bit pricey at 40 bones.

So, what say you, weathered airmen and wimeenz

I have a couple of these for home and car use and they are great. But I would not use them in a plane. Let me tell you why. First of all, they are big-about the size of a Mag-Lite two cell. Second, they are powered by shaking a large magnet device inside of them that is so powerful, I have actually read that you should not put it within 3 feet of a compass, or you will get bad readings. You're not even supposed to get close to your credit card because they can wipe away the magnetic strip. Also, as far as I know, they only come in white which is bad for night vision. Other than that, they are great for the car. They are virtually indestructable, and can take great extremes of heat and cold. I have, though, used it as a back-up when I couldn't find my red light. I made sure that I kept it in the back of the plane though!

For flying I would reccomend this.

I use this and it is great. I hang it around a little lanyard on my neck and it is perfect. It can be push button on or steady on by turning the end cap, so it can easily be used with one hand. It even has that great metally taste if you need to stick it in our mouth when your hands are full. The battery life is great. I would say around 15 hours or so before to you really need to replace it. Get one in red. In other words, I love it, and would highly reccomend it. You can probably find one at your local sports store for around $16.

forget 6 dollars, I always got mine for free...
so, I am looking for opinions here, is it worth it?
they didnt have one at the store, so they ordered it, should be avalable for the scratch and sniff test on the 6th of June

Ditto to the Streamlight Stylus light. I found one at a Battery Store for around $16. Fits in your shirt pocket (has a clip). It also has a rubber "grommet" that you can use to narrow or widen the beam.

I've never heard of AAAA batteries.

There is a flashlight in Sporty's (oh no!) that always catches my eye: it is square, you can switch between red and white, and it has a dimmer on it. Anyone tried it?

I don't believe in doom and gloom...

But just in case...I pack one of these. It's not only a 135 requirement to have at least a two cell flash light, but this thing is bullet proof.

I was at a gun show and one of the table holders there was selling led flash lights. He showed me this model, by turning it on then droping from shoulder height onto a concrete floor. The LED's are bright and emit no heat. Batteries last a long time in this light. You can set it on top of your flight bag and point it at the ceiling of the plane and it will radiate enough light to illuminate the whole cabin. One warning...even though it is bright for up close work...it will not shine a beam 50 yards away like a focused mag lite will. But then again...drop a maglite while it's in your flight bag, then go to use it later...see what happens.

That's why maglites have a spare bulb in the back end. I have a 3D cell maglite. 2D is a 135 / 121 requirement, but the 3 cell one is longer, and makes a great tool to defend yourself. I wish this light had a LED replacement bulb that could do the same as the normal bulb
