This is to all of you fractional pilots out there. I know you pack a suitcase--some stick to the "carry-on" size, and others I have been told bump up to a bigger suitcase and seem to get away with it (without checking it in).

But what about your second, smaller carry-on bag??? How big/small is it? Do any of you have any problems with airlines out there telling you that you need to check at least one of your bags in, or are they pretty good about it? Would like to get a good idea of what I can get away with.

I carry my roll bag, computer bag, and flight bag with books and such all on board, I have never checked my bags, but I also travel in uniform and they never give me any hassle, so if you want to carry more, wear your uniform it will save you any hassles

I carry on both bags also. It is rare they lose luggage but if you have ever been without yours, you will carry yours on to. I have a standard size roller and my laptop/FOM bag is 8"x 12"x 20". I have never had a problem except on RJs but then plane side check them.

I bring a rolling bag, a computer bag and one more small bag. I usually try to carry them onboard (if at all possible). As Capt Dad said, sometimes you have to gate-check the rolling bag on a RJunk. But there are times when having your bags with you is a big plus, like if scheduling changes your destination or the airline cancels. Call it peace of mind.

I've had to dump liquids once because I didn't work for a 121 carrier (the pr!ck was obviously having a bad day). So now I pack my 22" PNB rollaboard such that I can live for an 8 day tour, less toiletries and a few extra workout clothes. The rollaboard and my computer bag go with me. My shaving kit (liquids) and extras go into a small duffle, which I check. If I get separated from the duffle, it's no biggie to replace the toiletries for the week. I know a couple guys who carry the 26" and seem to get away with it.

I carry on my rollaboard and my computer backpack.

I have had problems with liquids at HPN and once at PBI even in uniform. I think that they may be relaxing the rules though because I was going to training in civvies a few weeks ago and they didn't say anything about the liquids in my bag.

I'll own up to it - I carry a 26" rollaboard and have only every been asked to check it once, which I did. I also carry a soft sided briefcase but that goes under the seat. I have been using that larger bag for over two years and have never run into problems with it. That being said the d@mn thing weighs a ton and some times its easier just to check it.

I have a rather large computer bag, and I have st times had trouble getting on with that, a 22" roller and a 22" duffel. "Two carryons and a personal item" doesn't compute with some security line people.

I have thought about this- a 22" roller, a small overnight bag, and a backpack for the laptop. This, I think, would get by with no problem.

Has anybody tried this and do you have any trouble?

Thanks for the link!

Does anyone else use these packing cubes? I bought these a while ago and they work great. I'm amazed how much stuff you can fit into them and highly recommend them.

Nope, haven't tried them but checked them out and just bought them. They look like a great idea! Thanks for the tip amaineiac.
