Fellow America West pilots,

As we mentioned in our previous update, like you, we are shocked and appalled at the Company's decision to layoff 175 West pilots, and we are working diligently to pursue any and all ideas to prevent these pilots from being unfairly furloughed at the expense of pilots who did not bring jobs to the merger. We will use all available lawful options on behalf of any and every America West pilot in this regard. We also feel compelled to remind each of you once again of Doug Parker's own words: "We would expect that no employee who already had been furloughed prior to the merger would be permitted to bump an active employee out of a job." While Mr. Parker and his managers continue to take no responsibility for their decisions, this latest decision is clearly within his control and in direct violation of his own clear words.

Be assured - our resolve is not going unnoticed. Why else would USAPA spend a good amount of their limited resources to file a frivolous lawsuit against West pilots? Why did an AWAPPA BOD member receive a hostile and intimidating phone call from a Company officer following last Friday's AWAPPA blast email? Management would very much like the AWA pilots to solve their self-induced labor problems by trying to make us just "accept" the mess they've created. However, we cannot and will not "accept" messes created by those who do not have the integrity to keep their own word.

For starters, it is important that we focus our efforts on the root cause of this problem: a blatant East bias in decision making by a couple of East Senior Vice Presidents. It is important that we demonstrate our support of Dave O'Dell and the other AWA pilots that are marked for unemployment. It is not unlikely that management is carefully gauging our reaction to this unfair news, as a means to "test the waters". After all, if the company can save the $110 million it had earmarked for pay parity by agreeing to date-of-hire seniority list in exchange for a cost-neutral contract without any outrage from the AWA pilots, then you had better believe that they will do it.

Let us be clear again that we do not advocate nor support any illegal activity as a means to achieve our goals. In fact, illegal activity can only harm our goals and distract from our efforts. No matter what happens in the coming weeks, we cannot stress enough the need to remain clear-headed and the refrain from any unlawful conduct. In the history of airline labor relations, unlawful conduct has never proven to be successful and it won't be here. Both USAPA and the company, in their quest to silence us, will be looking for any opportunity to take West hostages, and nobody should provide them the ammunition necessary to do that.

Who is going to be affected by the furloughs?

The following table details those who are projected to be affected by the furloughs (excluding voluntary leaves) if conducted under separate operations. The numbers clearly show that the East will enjoy a huge windfall in job security at the expense of the West pilots:

Although the windfall described by numbers is staggering, it is difficult to understand the true magnitude of the East windfall without looking at some East pilots who be enjoying a major windfall at the expense of West pilots:

  • PHL 767 FO, sen#2702 (east)Had been on furlough for just shy of 2 years when the merger was announced, and without the merger, would have never been recalled; Despite the fact that he did not bring a job to the merger, he is not slated to be furloughed and has 944 active pilots junior to him on the East list;
    • Date of hire places him in front of P0941, and 83% (1,487) of the America West pilot group (all of whom brought jobs to the merger);
    • Would not be furloughed if the Nicolau Award was in effect today.
  • PHL 320 FO, sen#2944 (east)
    • Had been on furlough for about 2.5 years (his 2nd furlough) when the merger was announced, and without the merger, would have never been recalled; Despite the fact that He did not bring a job to the merger, he is not slated to be furloughed and has 702 active pilots junior to him on the East list;
    • Date of hire places him in front of P1237, and 73% (1,320) of the America West pilot group (all of whom brought jobs to the merger)
    • Would not be furloughed if the Nicolau Award was in effect today.
  • LGA 320 FO, sen#3347 (east)
    • Had been on furlough for about 3.5 years when the merger was announced (which is longer than he had been an active pilot), and without the merger, would have never been recalled; Despite the fact that he did not bring a job to the merger, he is not slated to be furloughed and has 299 active pilots junior to him on the East list; Despite having an earlier hire date, he has nearly the same amount of actual time in active service that D.O. does;
    • Date of hire places him in front of P2408, despite the fact that he has never been furloughed and has been an active pilot for almost 3 times as long as W has. By date of hire, W also becomes senior to 36% (634) of the America West pilot group (all of whom brought jobs to the merger);
    • Would not be furloughed if the Nicolau Award was in effect today.
  • CLT 737 FO, sen#3479 (east)
    • was the most junior furloughed East pilot prior to the merger. Had been on furlough for about 3.5 years when the merger was announced (in contrast to the 19 months he had been an active pilot), and without the merger, would have never been recalled; has far less time in actual active service than D.O. does;
    • Despite the fact that W did not bring a job to the merger, he is not slated to be furloughed;
    • Date of hire places him in front of P2547, despite the fact that P2547 has never been furloughed and has been an active pilot for almost 4 times as long as M has. By date of hire, M also becomes senior to 30% (543) of the America West pilot group (all of whom brought jobs to the merger).
  • PHL 320 FO, sen#3511 (east)
    • Is a "CEL" pilot, which means that he never flew mainline equipment prior to the merger, and was only added to the seniority list because of a contractual agreement with the AAA MEC; Has only about a year of active service at the mainline (2 years less than D.O.);
    • Despite the fact that K did not bring a job (or recall rights) to the merger, he his not slated to be furloughed;
    • Date of hire places him in front of P3067, despite the fact that C has never been furloughed and has been an active pilot for almost 4 times as long as K has. By date of hire, K also becomes senior to 6% (119) of the America West pilot group (all of whom brought jobs to the merger). Interestingly, C is slated to be furloughed while K will remain employed.

Give em hell!

Godspeed to the AWAMEC - screw the USCABA boyz...

There is no AWA MEC as they are no longer represented by ALPA.

they might be something else...but not an MEC. And, legally, the company cannot negotiate with them as they are not the elected representative body for the pilots.
