WELCOME TO THE MAJORS... Earlier this fall, JetBlue was named a “Major Airline.” That means that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) awarded “Major Airline” status because they reported more than $1 billion in revenue for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2004.

Well, by that measure, AirTran is also a major airline, but although both of our companies meet the DOT criteria, I am not sure that Jet Blue or AirTran quite qualifies as what most pilots think of when we think of "major airlines".

Don't get me wrong- AirTran has really become a decent airline . . . and I am happy to be here, but I think it will be a while yet before you'll hear me say that I work "for a major airline".

In four years, we we have doubled again, to 2000 pilots, several bases, etc.- well, I might say it then.

Hey Ty,

Just curious, your profile says "LCC Skipper" but you don't have a Type Rating in an DC-9, or even a 737 for that matter?

What's up with that?

You mean on America's Most Wanted database, don't ya?

[sigh] "My grift ain't what it used to be . . . . . .".

Looks like JetBlue's welcome to the majors party may include losses in the next few quarters...

What an illustrious club...

Of course I can't wait to see the nightmare the competition is in for in the negative column..

What an industry....

Congrats guys!!! Although on my last flight with you guys, I noticed some garbage in the seatpocket. Maybe you could do a better job cleaning the cabin instead of friggin around in the cockpit?

Be nice, Freddie or that JB FA in your avatar won't let you stare at her t!ts anymore! :p TC

Well, "most pilots" don't determine the definition of "major airline"... The DOT does.

JetBlue Airways (JBLU:Nasdaq - commentary - research) stock fell Friday after Raymond James analysts downgraded it to market perform from outperform.

Shares were recently down 98 cents, or 3.8%, to $24.82.

The low-cost carrier missed analysts' earnings estimates in the third quarter and is expected to lose money in the next two quarters as it struggles with high fuel costs and fierce price competition.

Shares of most other airlines, which went on a tear Wednesday and Thursday, were slightly lower as recent declines in crude oil futures moderated. Recently, the January crude contract was down 10 cents at $43.15 in Nymex floor trading, amid receding worries about short-term supply. Prices were down almost 2% earlier in the session. Crude lost 7% and 5% on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, falling to its lowest level since Sept. 10. That was welcome news for airline investors, because jet fuel constitutes the second-biggest cost for the industry after labor

I too hope the stock gets cut in half so that I can buy, but if fuel prices keep falling I'm afraid the stock may only get to around $18. or $19. Hedge Funds have taken a huge short position in Jetblue anticipating a big spiral downward. Catching the bottom may be difficult, particularly if the Hedge Funds start to cover their short early, in which case you could have a tremendous short squeeze.

Errrrrr.... You have decided that most pilots don't think of JetBlue and AirTran as majors... Even though they are? And you're pointing a finger at ME?

WTFO?

No, I think you pointed the finger at yourself.

If any airline with over $1 bil in scheduled revenue service is to be called a Major, then you would also have to call Mesa, Comair, ASA, Eagle, etc. Majors, too.
