Any easy rules of thumb to help me understand the weight shift formula... I am struggling a bit. Any help would be appreciated.

Never mind i get it.... Took a little, But I am ready to shift away....

This formula may help you even more. Weight shifted - times Distance Moved - Divided by total weight. That will give you the answer to your question.
 
Little weight over big weight equals little distance over big distance.


Little weight equals the weight that you are shifting

Big weight equals the weight of the airplane before the shift or weight change occoured.


Little distance equals the distance the C.G. will move (usually your X variable in the equation)



Big distance equals the distance that you shifted the weight.
Example weight of the airplane 2500

Moving a box from a station of 120 to 50.

Box weighs 154 pounds

154 over 2500 equals X over 70(weight moved from 120 to 50)

so the equation you must cross multiply 154*70 equals 2500*X

so
10780 equals 2500X

So just divide 10780/2500
X equals 4.213 which is how far your C.G. moves.
