I use a logitech webcam, spent about 120$ on the thing, make sure you get a good resultion on the cam, ie 680 or greater. Have 2 kids at home, and get to watch them play. Cant beat it man, makes the time go by fast, and makes you feel right at home no matter where you are. Logitech makes good stuff though, check out newegg.com, best place to find that shiz.

Cheers

I can't comment on webcams, but I can definitely second getting it from Newegg.com. I've used them almost exclusively for all computer needs for years....they've never done me wrong, always have the best price or within a couple dollars of it, and get the components to me quickly. Never had anything DOA from them, either.

I use a Logitech Notebook Deluxe. The camera's great! The only issue you'll find at hotels is that many of them give you a private IP address, and you'll need a public address to video IM. If the hotel offers free internet access, you'll likely find this problem, and even the ones that charge for it rarely offer a public address purchase option (usually $2-3 extra). If you call the hotel provider's tech support, and the tech is knowledgable, he/she may be able to reset your connection for free.

Also beware what kind of IM program you use. MSN Messenger 7.5 works best for me. If you're gonna try to connect with someone on an Apple and you're on a PC, or vice-versa, prepare yourself for plenty of frustration!

I do this fairly often... Get Logitec Notebook cam. No other is better! I can turn off all the lights in the room. Then, use the reflective light from the screen of my monitor, and I can still get cristal clear images.

Next, don't spend any money on chat programs. I use MSN messenger. If you have had your laptop or desktop awhile, then use add/remove programs to uninstall. I have learned the hardway a clean installation works the best. The only limitation to MSN is you can not view more than one cam. So, when these special occurances happen, I use yahoo messenger. Yahoo is slower, but it still works.

Enjoy,

My husband added the Logitech to our computer, recently. He talked about it before the new contract, but that's all we could do about it at that time. The kids have fun with it---acting silly for Dad---and it does help with the time he's away. Every frac family should be able to have things like that. When professional pilots can't afford life's little extras , something IS wrong.

Can you create ONE post without a mention of your pro union passion or should we say OBSESSION?

Should also mention webcam comes in handy for a side business. NJW, didnt we see you on cameltoe.com? Your avatar suggests same. OR was it thehun?

I post my observations, and the support they generate. We postponed buying a webcam and I'm sure there are other frac pilots that will read this thread who are also forced to view such purchases as luxury items. That is completely unfair. It might not bother you, but I feel badly for those families and will voice my complaints on their behalf. If you see a way to gain the frac pilots the contract they deserve, then by all means feel free to share that wisdom with us all. However, many of us think that 1108 is their best chance to afford the extras that make life easier. I receive PMs, from pilots and wives, that thank me for supporting their cause. If you don't want to read my posts, put me on your ignore list.

heck, if I was NETJETHUSBAND I would spend every single hour possible out of the house working 4 jobs so she could have "lifes little extras". Im talking 30 on - 0 off.

anyhow....for those interested...try isight. It works great.

skype has a videocam feature now. works pretty good. Also i use AIM and that works fine too.

Logitech is a good camera. No problems. I keep one running at my home computer looking outside so i can take a look at what's going on while i'm on the road.

You want some interesting stuff? Try paltalk.com :)

Yes, the iSight really does work well. The new dual-core laptops, which just started shipping, have them built right into the screen bezel. Very slick; one less extra thing to lug around and hook up.

And it'll do video chat just fine with Windows AIM users, if that's a concern.

I dunno...! Have you seen the new Triton AIM? What a freakin' mess that bit of software is. Hard enough getting it to work on a PC, much less trying to connect to an Apple user. Now if the PC user has the old AIM, it's still possible. Gotta say, though, my iSight's been nothing but a $160 paper weight at home. I'm suffering from all the issues discussed in Apple.com's iChat Support forums. "It just works" my butt!

He asked for "decent." :D

For "decent", stick with a windows platform. :crying:
For "superior" go with a mac. :)

iBook on the road, eMac at home, both with iChat and iSight and zero problems.
