Of the three, what is the process to determine where they spend their jail time?

Severity of the offense, the offender's age, previous history of repeat offenses, educational background and type of offense., length of sentence. 25 years? he will not be eligible for min securtiy. He is doing Federal Time. The Feds won't think twice of putting white collar offenders in Atlanta USP or Marion USP with violent offenders.
When I worked for DOC in NC, there were institutions strictly for sex offenders, or geriatrics or people with mental or physical challenges.

As a former Corrections Officer, you are correct. Either he will be in a facility with other sex offenders, or protective custody. In gen pop (general population) he will be dead within a month.

Dahmer refused protective custody, making him an open target. He was attacked twice prior to getting whacked.
We know who runs the show, the cons run the prison, the COs just supervised them.
