As UAW workers nationwide go out on the picket lines as a sign of unity, we (pilots) look to staple pilot groups, take their airplanes and routes, etc... We always seem to be only looking out for ourselves. Do you think it is our personality type, or is it something else?

Why not do a critical analysis and answer the question..... pilots seem to have allot of questions but not too many answers... maybe thats the (a) problem...

Rez is good at that. ;)

Rez is just trying to get the guys around here to start actually thinking critically about these things instead of continuing to bring up unrealistic notions of illegal work actions and national SOSs. Let's work on things that are actually workable.

Please oh please don't compare me to member of the UAW. I have all my own teeth and no beer gut.

Seriously...do you really think this move by the GM UAW (not all UAW as you implied) is going to be a winning situation for them. Gettlefinger needs to flex his muscles, just like the Teamsters did at UPS in '97. They will then sit back down to "negotiate" a winning contract, one that probably has already been agreed to. UAW leaders can then crow about getting the best contract possible. Any Teamster can tell you the contract approved after the strike in '97 was less than the company offered before the strike. But hey...the Teamsters got to say they won. I prefer honest and realistic negotiations that don't require the use of smoke & mirrors to declare a "victory".
Dang, I'm starting to use those same funny marks that "O" uses all the time.

I wonder about UAWs timing. I believe there is a very large unsold inventory of cars out there. They may actually be helping GM by shutting the line down for a short time. It should help lower the excess inventory without costing GM much at all.

Isn't that answering a question with a question?

Here is an answer..but you aren't going to like it. Why? Because it will require effort on [the readers] part, instead of waiting for organizations like the UAW to "show the way" for Air Line Pilots to fix thier own career problems.....

You can start by going to amazon.com

Read "Mavericks of the Sky" If you want to know about 'fly and grieve it', the cultural origins of the RLA and operational control, then read about the USPS and airmail pilots.

Next.. Read FLying the Line Vol I and II. If you are an Air Line Pilot and you haven't read these books then maybe you are a christian that has never read the Bible.

When you're done buy "Hard Landing". A great read on the airline industry and how the players play.

By now you are getting uncomfortable with our status as Air Line Pilots in this economy. Read "Confessions of a Union Buster". Yeah... its like that in America.

Tired of reading... buy the DVD titled Matewan. See how our economy treats labor. Machine guns against labor.... Need something a little more easy.. Norma Rae is a good labor movie.

Back to the books... Read The Southwest Airlines Way and see how it can really work between managmeent and labor.

Finally, besides getting giddy about the UAW, what are you doing for the UAW? Probably not much..and that is excatly what the rest of the UAW and the country is doing for us as Air Line Pilots...

So its time to man up, cowboy up, whatever you want to call it... but the only people that care about Air Line Pilots is us... start caring and stop complaining...

Indeed, an excellent post!

The guy is going to hurt himself doing all that, or at least want to afterward?!

I sure like the healthcare solution they came up with. I think they'll do it better than and cheaper than GM could/wanted to. Now GM has to give the workers an actionable plan.

I think ALPA should do something similiar on the healthcare issue. Globalization is going to pit us against pilots from other countries with socialized medicine. Remove healthcare costs from the equation, and we match up well in the pilot world market (mostly).

I think the union should also take over retirement as well as a few other things too. So far, can't get my reps interested.

Matter of fact, Dylan Radigan is about to interview DAL's Bastian on MSNBC and ask about healthcare.....

OK, interview over.

If any DAL pilot just saw that, and you are now not mad enough to cover an NFL kickoff, there's something wrong with your genes!!!!!!!!!

Where do they get these a$$holes????

The guy is nearly LAUGHING about terminating the pilots' pension, and then BRAGGING about caring about the other employees!!

The UAW rolled over and gave GM some MAJOR concessions. Strike or not, GM UAW workers ended up with a POS contract and it was a huge step backwards from their last contract in almost all sections.

The UAW was concerned because of how much of their work was and is being outsourced. With the European Open skies it will be same for us. Our so called code share partners flying our routes because they can do it cheaper in some cases. I think our next contracts should reflect some kind of protections from that. To me its a mild form of cabotage that will only grow in the future. We should be careful not to let this cat get out of the bag like we did with RJ flying.

First things first.... look at the martitime industry...

Second... with most pilots rejecting the political side to thier careers.... it is going to be allot harder than we want...

What makes everyone think that the UAW is going to be able to provide better healthcare coverage to its members than GM did? I don't know why everyone thinks this is such a big win for the UAW...anyone care to discuss?
