From an article that appeared in the local newspaper, the new airport director (there have been 6 airport directors in the last 13 years)wants to secure scheduled service at an airport with a very spotty record on scheduled service since the early 1980's.The airport's location might be a geographical handicapp since another airport,Triad Int'l (GSO) is located only twenty miles away.

The terminal bldg is mid-twentieth century design, the runways,(2) are 6000 ft.(ILS,VOR-DME,NDB approaches)and 3900 ft,no approaches. The airport has not been expanded since it was built in 1941.It is difficult to see how a fully loaded CRJ/ERJ/Dornier/Avro or other types(Boeing/McD Douglas) can operate with enough fuel to fly to LGA/MDW/MCO/DFW,without limiting passenger loads significantly on a 90 degree F.day Boeing 737's & 757's use the field, but are severly limited on fuel and payload for take-off and landing.

The Forsyth County Airport Commission has responsibility to oversee and manage the airport. The airport is county-owned.The real power, however is Landmark Aviation,(formerly Piedmont-Hawthorne,Formerly Piedmont Aviation.)The commission has basically rubber-stamped whatever Landmark Aviation desires, this has gone on for decades.

Since the airport is located in an area that has a population of roughly 1.5 million within a 60 mile radius, scheduled service might work if the marketing was done correctly, however given the state of the airline industry today it still may be a losing proposition.

I live in the area, sadly, I don't see it happening as GSO is so close and has trouble competing as it is with CLT (non stop flights to many places). Im afraid INT best bet is to concentrate on attracting strong corporate flight dept's (for instance, BB@T still operates out of Wilson, NC yet they are now based in INT) and continue to keep companies like Pace air and associated maintenance.

Pace had big plans 3 years ago to start scheduled service into INT with Hooters. It seems that never came to light. I think they moved the headquarters to MYR, even.
