"National airline fares rose 9 percent last year, the largest price increase in 25 years, the senators said in a letter dated Feb. 28 to Transportation Secretary Mary Peters."

Yet in those 25 years they have been in almost continuous decline, I read somewhere, that we were at 1985 fare levels, adjusted for inflation. Flying is about as cheap as it can get, but the airlines do need to survive. I think the recent spate of ch.11 shows that fares are indeed low enough!

The airlines will survive in some form or another. With luck the free market NOT the government will determine who passes the test of time.

A democrat pushing for foreign owned airlines in the US reminds me of Allan Alda's character in The Aviatior.

Feinstein' position does not make any sense; this will piss off the pro union voters as well as anyone with protectionist sympathies.

Airlines are still government controlled in a myriad ways and to allow Virgin to gain access to domestic markets at a time when the airlines are only begining to regain their footing is incredibly short sighted. Its akin to go airlines in Hawaii; great prices but then you push the quality carriers out of business and are left with cr%p for the consumers and the employees.

The sad thing is that no one cares about employees of airlines, or come to think of it, employees of any where else. As long as the consumer gets what they want cheap and fast. Quality doesn't mean a gd thing anymore. This country is all about 'Mc Politics'. For all the general public cares we can be illegals, as long as we get them there for $50.

"...there are only two ways to make money in the airline industry, raise prices or cut labor...", Dr. Kapps

We have sold America to the highest bidder in everything else. What makes you think that aviation will escape?
As much as it stings, It is just a matter of time. (sooner rather than later)

At least they offered to fire that crook Fred Ried. They would probably be better off without him anyway.
