Gonna be tough to win if he got hurt in December of 2009 and the first iPad wasn't released until April of 2010.

You gotta love factual journalism.

He put his back out swinging his bag into place on the 73 cockpit and he's been out on medical since then. The reason this is making news now, is that he has 3 years to sue for further loss off income, due to an injury sustained at work.

Dont know him but apparently it has been extremely painful and debilitating.

Virgin is actually in the process of working out how getting us iPads would work. After this, it might be a little quicker.
 
Whats next...I hurt my back carrying my suitcase of clothes for my trip. Now if my airline allowed me to fly naked I would not have to carry all of this stuff...I'm suing.

But I can understand where he is coming from....he can't work and has to put food on the table.
 
Delta cp told me once that you wouldn't believe the amount of guys out for pulling their back lifting their luggage.

I want my own personal porter, they can meet us at the jetway after every days flying. It wouldn't be that hard for them to meet us with a cold frosty adult beverage, and for the walk around specialist an umbrella with a rickshaw ride for the walk around. He/she could hold the flashlight and aim it where directed. I imagine that potentially we could use TSA blue bellies to start as porters.
 
I didn't sue anybody, but I've been out on OJI for messing up my shoulder with the flight bag. When I should my PT guy the arrangement in the cockpit and brought my flight case in he was at a loss for words as to how terrible it was for a human body.
 
For me the concept of somebody getting injured because they lifted 40lbs. Is indicative that they need to spend less time in McDonalds and more time exercising.

I dontthink it's just the weight alone. It's how one contorts themselves to situate the weight in the appropriate mechanics.

This is true. It was the cost justification that prompted the move to Electronic Flight Bags, if that tells you anything about the number of pilots involved.

Uh huh. I like to use 40 lb dumbbells at the gym, but I don't try to hyperextend one with one arm, while leaning forward and twisting it between a seat and a wall. :laugh:

Uhhhh.....I work out at least 3 times a week and haven't eaten fast food in at least a month. And guys a lot more fit than me have gotten hurt.

If you haven't flown the 737 it is much different than the 767. There is no way to get your bag in that's a straight shot.

Btw I agree a lot of pilots need to skip a meal, but I don't think it matters in this case.

If you do not lift correctly, you are going to get injured no matter how fit you are.
 
How are y'all getting the bag into position? Are you going over the seat or behind the seat? Either way your back is hosed...
 
Out of those statistics, how many OJI's for carrying 40 lbs are reported by women pilots? grow a pair and stop the whiny BS I say, follow the example of the ladies, you don't see them whining about the 40 lbs.
 
1 million? Hasn't he seen Virgin's embarrassing payscales? He'd have to work 60 years to make that much. good luck.
 
I've spoken with my chiroproactor about flight bags. Lifting 40 lbs. and then extending your arms straight out as you reach over the seat puts a tremendous amount of strain on your back. Couple that with an active lifestyle growing up playing sports through high school and the occasional college intramural will slowly wear your body out. I exercise regularly, try to eat healthy, but age is catching up on me and old sports injuries are showing up decades later as I get older.

Exactly. These guys talking about "whining" clearly don't understand the concept of leverage and how it can greatly multiply the force acting on your lower back.

Only way I could do it in the 73 without stressing the back too bad was to go behind the seat and brace myself with the seat itself. Non-lifting arm on the seat, shoulder braced on my arm, and then hang and swing the bag with the other arm. If I did this, it took most of the stress off the spine. Learned this the hard way!
 
I've been leveraging the bag for over 30 years, what I don't understand is as to why the vast majority of these OJI'S are reported by younger men, older pilots and women reports of getting injured due to carrying their flight bags are very few and far between, there are people in this world doing real back breaking labor, the physical strain in our job is not more than your average office worker. Whiny babies one and all, I'm done with this thread
 
I actually agree with dumb pilot here-
Weak arms, weak back= OJI-

But I also agree with PCL- stats don't lie- they tell the truth about weak pilots- I think girls probably are out at about the same percentage- but plenty of women are so much weaker they don't try to pull the thing out with one arm- it's a type of weakness dumb pilot- very few know the correct way to take their flight bag out to avoid injury- but in the 737- there probably isn't a way in which you can do it and avoid common weaknesses- just a matter of time.

If your argument is avoid all weakness- ok-
I agree-
But it's not realistic.

The win win solution- pilots work out full body style and lose their weaknesses-
And companies should take advantage of technology to reduce the risk-
And until then- go to ship sets- no reason we need 5 times the number of flight bags running around anyway-

We haven't had to carry flight bags in a couple of years now. Every plane has Jepp AirSide bags updated by the company on a regular schedule. We just have to carry a little binder with mid-cycle revisions.
 
Oh- you're the same as us then- good- but would love to go full iPad mode
 
I can't believe this.....this will make the famous lady, coffee in her crotch McDonalds lawsuit look legitimate!
