According to Friday's Wall Street Journal, Virgin America looks like it will actually get off the ground. Start up capital looks like about $170 million which is $40 million more than the most successful start-up in recent memory, Jet Blue. Sir Richard will control approximately 25% of the new company although regulators are questioning whether the US principals are stalking horses for a domestic airline actually controlled by foreign interests.

Questions: 1) How many of you 121 furloughed guys will take a flier on this operation? 2) How many of you active 121 BK carrier guys (DAL, NWA, UAL, etc.) would be willing to take a leave of absence or punch out altogether and fly for the Billionaire Brit? 3) Would you resign your seniority number to do so? 4) Is this just another step on the downward spiral of this profession and an avenue to the offshoring of American pilot jobs?

Take it away....

My take. Virgin Blue in the Pacific links with Virgin America which links with Virgin Atlantic. 3 seperate companies on paper but in reality 1. Watch out.

121 furloughed guy. First, what's the pay and QOL? No, seriously. I've got a good 91 gig now. If the pay is lowball, C'ya. Gotta work 20 days a month? C'ya.

If it's a new JB and I can get in on the front end, I may bite. For my homies who are flowbies at AE, it's a no brainer. If you're on the bottom of the list at NWA/UA/UAWA it is probably worth a leave of absence.

Branson doesn't do anything half-a$$ed.TC

How does one apply for a pilot position?

I FedEx'ed SRB a resume in March of '03. I'll send you an app when I get to class... ;) TC

P.S.--They aren't hiring pilots right now. They will accept resumes on their website.

Ummm.... doesn't he pay his pilots "half-a$$" wages?

That's in pounds per year. 1 USD equals .56 pounds. So...

Snr Capt = 173000
Entry Capt = 128000
Snr FO = 112000
Entry FO = 77000

This is international pay for Virgin Atlantic on 747's. Not sure about smaller stuff.

This is Virgin Blue pay rates. A is Australian dollars which equal .75 USD. So...

Top Capt = 126400
Capt Base = 111000
FO top = 72000
FO base = 60000

This seems more likely for pay rates for smaller equipment like the 320. But with eveyone negotiating rates down and so many out of work pilots, it could be even lower here. Who knows....
