Virgin America reports loss for 3 quarters of '08

SAN FRANCISCO - Virgin America said Monday it lost $175.4 million in the first three quarters of last year, as the fledgling airline was plagued with startup costs and rapidly accelerating fuel prices.

The carrier, which was launched in 2007, reported operating revenue of $259.6 million during those three quarters.
Virgin America's load factor, an industry measure of occupancy, rose to 81.4 percent in the third quarter from 77.6 percent in the second quarter.
While capacity nearly doubled, unit revenue in the third quarter was rose more than 75 percent compared with the fourth-quarter of 2007, Virgin America's first full operating quarter.
Virgin America is a U.S. controlled and operated airline and is a separate company from Virgin Atlantic, which is controlled by British billionaire Richard Branson. Branson's Virgin Group is a minority holder in Virgin America.
