Anyone know what the plus symbol on the New York class b for the airspace floor means. The plus in front of the 05, 500 foot floor just south of JFK.

Teaching a pvt pilot ground school class and setting up a chart and airspace lesson. Thanks.

I think it's above 500, not including the 500?


Been a long time though.

EDIT: I think it's that way for the transitioning VFR aircraft so they can stay at 500 feet and not need to contact ATC for clearance in. Last I did that myself was 1997 though...
 
That allows all of us little VFR guys to transverse the airspace below 500' along the coast, common all the way down to Florida. i once called Miami and told them my life history while everyone else was waiting on the req. When i was done he said stay below 500' and do not answer this transmission!
