Going to Bangkok for 2 wks and never been there before!!
I am looking for suggestions for things to do..

first of all, after about 2 or 3 days, get the he!! out of bkk. while its great city with great food and drink, its a big city. go south for the beaches and scuba diving and go north for the hills and more authentic thai living. IMO the best way to get around thailand is the overnite trains. they go north and south and will cost about 20-30 us and you get a bunk in an AC car. get on the train, have few beers and then fall asleep, when you wake up, you are there.

anywhere you go, you can get great food and places to stay for next to nothing.

have fun

Lot of stuff to do and to see. A visit to the Grand Palace is a must. Ayutthaya is the ancient capital of Siam and is about a 2 hour drive away. Lot of old things to see there. Kanchanaburi is west of BKK and has the bridge over the river Kwai and a WW2 museum. The Royal Barge Museum is neat too. Chaing Mai is in the very north and very interesting city also. Ticket prices on Thai for domestic segments are very cheap so I would fly if possible. Other times, you could find a driver to take you on the shorter trips. Thai society is very different from the US and if you read up on the dos and donts, it will make your time there a lot more fun. There are some big donts that can get you in a lot of trouble. (insulting the king) And be careful, you might end up getting married, i did. LOL

I second this info! Also check out Bangkok Airways for inter-country flights. Back in january I flew around on a revenue ticket with them for about the same price as a train ticket. If you want to go south to Malaysia check out the town Langkawi just south of the border. Also, Phuket is pretty much back to normal after the tsunami... Have fun!

i'll secone what d328pilot said... go visit grand palace/wat phra kaew, check out ayutthaya, etc.

the best thing to do is go to borders books, get a few of their travel books on thailand and sit down in their coffee shop. with a cup of coffee and a pen and paper, go thru the books and figure out what interests you. take that list with you and hit what you can while you're there. dont rush, if you dont finish your list, you'll just have to make another trip. :) i also buy one of the travel guides for the country i'm going to..usually lonely planet.

also consider going to chiang mai, making a quick trip into cambodia to check out angkor wat.

if you're going to want to see the nightlife while you are there, you'll have to do some internet searching as the travel books dont always cover this part very well. :) some places to check out while you're in BKK: nana plaza, soi 33, soi cowboy, poseidon 2000 entertainment complex, cm2. they all are unique in their own way.. you should be able to find that one of those suits your needs and tastes.

also go check out pattaya. jet ski, scuba dive, etc during the day. at night check out walking street. the hoff brau house on beach road has a great band.. the singer was really good and used to play for a while. the last time i checked the singer shortened his gig and is only there fairly late in the evening. the place is expensivle by local standards and they have a dress code of covered shoes. also dont forget to check out sabai land, or sabai dee, etc down by the Big C shopping center. dont leave the country without a proper foamy!

on your way out of BKK, stop by MBK for some shopping. huge shopping center and you can pick up some things for a pretty good price there.

if you want more specifics on anything or have any other questions.. feel free to PM me.
