I have a question for the military folks:

Is there anyway for me to partially fund the cost of a type rating with GI Bill or other VA Benefits if I have already had my college education paid via Naval Academy or full 4-year ROTC Scholarship?

Everything I have found in my research indicates that Academy grads and 4-year ROTC scholarship grads do not qualify. Are there any loop-holes to this rule, or am I doomed to pay the big money?

Thanks in advance for any info that may help. :)

It's time for the Weapons School answer, "It depends." I was able to make it happen. The laws have changed over the years and it depends upon your yeargroup's entitlements. Check your PMs for details.

Yes. The Reserve GI Bill. I'm a boat school guy who qualified for it. If you join a reserve squadron and sign a paper that says you'll stick around for six years you qualify. That being said, getting the money from the VA for me was like getting blood from a stone. I finally got some, but not what I expected. Every bit helps however, so I ain't complaining! PM me if you want more details.

99,

A good place to start is www.gibill.va.gov and go to educational benefits. The "advertised" rate is 60% of "approved" charges for your flight training. In the end my reimbusment for my type was much less than 60%, but like I said, every bit helps.

For most people it does work, but there is a clause buried that prevents "service school graduates" from using GI bill monies for type ratings...I've been fighting the fight for over two years agianst a brick wall with no success. It is obviously worth the investment towards your future. On the otherhand, if you are covered under the Montgomery GI bill and paid your entry fee in the past, you can save a portion of the cost, no matter how you recieved your degree. So it does depend as the weapons school is fond of repeating...talk to the eduaction office and make sure they are quoting from the regulations, seems many like to paint a rosey picture and when the bills come due, you are left out to your own funding!

Good luck!!!

I have heard pilots using the GI bill for flight training, I saw that somebody posted the GI Bill website. You may want to stop by a major college, one that has a veterans assistance officer ( I think that is what they call it) and ask for assistance. In California, CAL State Long Beach has one.

What kind of type rating, some training centers are approved for flight training, using the GI bill, pretty sure.

GI Bill for Type Rating

I am a USAFA grad and I was able to get the GI Bill and use it for my ATP and Type. It covered exactly 60% of the course cost. Not including food, hotel, beer, etc...
