So does that mean you DO or DO NOT work there?

I do not. I thought that was pretty obvious since my profile says "717 copilot" and AAA doesn't have 717s.

Other airlines have independent unions and it seems to work OK for them.

As a member of one of those independent unions, I beg to differ.

3 ALPA carriers bite the dust in as many weeks. MESA on the brink. But the ALPA "Mother Ship" show must go on. Business as usual! ALPA MEC meeting is being held at the at the Mandarin Oriental, Washington DC, described as one of the, “Top 100 Hotels of the World." Following are some of the descriptions of this hotel from their web site: "Quite simply we offer guests a new level of luxury." "Our elegant rooms and suites offer wonderful views. Our restaurant, CityZen, is under the guidance of Eric Ziebold, one of America’s ‘best new chefs’. Our spa facilities have earned one of the highest accolades in the region. Guests enjoy wonderful views over the stately city sights and waterfront. At Mandarin Oriental, Washington DC, we pride ourselves on providing a level of luxury that is unique in the American capital... grandeur that greets our hotel guests at every turn." Rooms with an airline discount run about $300/night. For those interested in learning more about the manner in which ALPA spends your dues dollars, click here to visit the Mandarin Oriental's web site. The hotel offers no shuttle service so those pilots wishing to attend must find their own way.

ALPA didn't RUN any of the airlines that went out of business. What would usapa done differently to keep those carriers in business?

300 dollar hotel room? big freakin deal.

$300/night for a decent hotel in DC isn't unreasonable.

It's actually a pretty decent bargain. ALPA does a good job of finding pretty good deals on hotels and meeting spaces. The hotel we used for the BOD in Vegas was the cheapest union convention/hotel space in the country.

Ask a MESA First Officer if $300 is a big deal or not..it's just a weeks pay for him or her. Ask a now out of work ALPA pilot if $300 is a big deal. It is is a big deal when your using others money. Lots of airline crews stay in DCA on RON's. I'm willing to bet the the airline rate is below 100 per night per crew member. I guess it's just to much for ALPA to stay in the same digs it's dues paying members stay in night after night. Hey, but who I'm I....just a lowly dues paying Line Swine. Who am I , or anyone at that to queston how "OUR" money is spent? REZ, your avatar says "Fixing ALPA" I guess spending others money is not part of that change.

Not if its any place actually in the District; most crews I know of stay in Arlington or Crystal City.

As a former fellow "lowly dues paying line swine", I didn't nor do I now have any problem with $300 hotel rooms in friggin' DC. I used to live there, I know how expensive it is...$300 is a pittance, especially in or near peak tourist season (ie NOW).

If the BoD is eating $200 steak dinners at Charlie Palmer Steakhouse get back to me...until then STFU about hotel rooms. If this bothers you so much, you definitely don't want to know how mid-level government employees spend your tax money

Most crew hotels are not near Capital Hill or the Herndon offices or the DC offices. How much extra money would ALPA waste on taxis and rental cars if they put volunteers in crew hotels 20 minutes from where they need to be? A hell of a lot more than they'd spend on $300/night hotel rooms. The accounting department in Herndon and the event planning staff are not carefree spenders. They watch the purse strings pretty well. If ALPA is spending $300/night on a hotel, there's a good reason for it.

Sure.... because the hotel is non union and the labor is real cheap. How would it look if ALPA used cheap non union labor at a hotel it used. Then a guy like you would be on this message board calling ALPA hypocrites for using cheap under paid labor...

Who to make happy?

So ALPA should treat its own like Mesa treats its own?

Why not attend the open sessions of the meeting...

Every pilot there will be a volunteer. Not getting paid. So why should these guys stay in some dump Mesa Hotel or even better sleep on the jet... camping style.. just so they can volunteer thier time away from familes to make your career better....

ALPA negotiated that contract for MESA, right? The one that resulted in pilots "camping" on the airplanes just to get some sleep?

Havn't heard of a SkyWest pilot sleeping on the CRJ.

Are you calling my blue lanyard gay?

Yeah big tex, I am. I call my own blue lanyard gay to, but I'm playing along. Lanyards are gay, the way I see it. I suppose they are ok for glasses on the ski slope, but thats about it.

Every time I walk by a lovely lady with my gay blue lanyard I look the other way and hope she didn't see me. I asked the girl behind the desk at the Roosevelt in SEA if she thought lanyards were gay and she laughed and said yes.

Tell Dark Cloud to answer his phone.

I've got news for you: Any hotel in the DC area is going to be unaffordable for a Mesa FO (no offense to Mesa FOs). This hotel was chosen because it is a union run hotel. Do you really want your union dues going to non union companies? I don't.

If you think that your USAPA reps will be staying at the Super 8, you've got another thing coming. USAPA reps will be staying at nice hotels...they will be on full time flight pay loss...they won't be expensinig their meals at Shoney's Buffet...they will be paying their lawyers salaries that when seen by us seem extravegant and outrageous...they will probably have secretaries that will have high (incorrect) salaries shown on union busting websites. Those scenarios will only happen if USAPA is able to survive financially, which I doubt, but will leave you with the same small problems that upset you now.

If you are really upset about this hotel bill, why don't you call the Sec-Treas and find out why this hotel was chosen? That will probably answer all of your questions about why they didn't chose a cheaper hotel. Or you could just complain more about it on a message board...

Life's a trade off. The trade off at Mesa is upgrading the day you hit 1500hrs TT. You want turbine PIC? Mesa's ALPA has you covered. You want QOL? There are many reputable commuters that will give you ALPA earned work-rules, but you won't upgrade for a while...

As long as MESA is a nothing but a PIC stepping-stone, the Mesa ALPA membership won't stand up to attain improvements that will harm their ability to build time and move on.

The point was to alert Rez that he was dissing the working conditions of an ALPA carrier.....plain and simple.

If ALPA's so g'damn powerful and worthwhile, then why does life suck at so many of its carriers these days?
