I was there when they switched from the old res system (I can't even remember the name) to Sabre.

It was a meltdown of almost Biblical proportions. You couldn't walk through the LGA terminal there were so many people in there. If you by chance could get a plane off the gate, it took 30 minutes for the W/B numbers on the ACARS.

Why these management idiots would switch to old technology is beyond me.

At least they didn't do it over a Holiday rush weekend...

Wasn't the previous USAirways problem over the Christmas time frame many years ago?

Yeah the pacer to sabre change over was kind of funny to watch.

I expected to see the same cluster F*%#, and low and behold!

AIRLINE MANAGEMENT WILL NEVER LEARN FROM THEIR MISTAKES. THEY JUST GET RAISES AND MORE BONUSES.

Oh yea, I remember that. My ex-GF was an agent during that change over, and she would just curse up a bluestreak on how much Sabre was going backwards.

Nu

Hey US/HP, two words- Beta test!
I'm glad I didn't have to deadhead out of CLT today!

I can see the media headlines now-

Tradgedy at USAir hubs! Millions of pax held hostage at airport! Bill of Rights!

Then, they will show old stock footage of Allegheny DC-9 and BAC-111's taking off.

To fair, this was better than I expected. Debacle though it was, it fell short of a complete meltdown. The TWA switchover to Sabre I'd say went relatively smoothly.

Like Valentine's Day, for example.

Fixed the glitch? Has anyone seen my stapler?

You're right. It's only a crisis if babies and airplanes are stuck to the tarmac. Actually, was the word TARMAC anywhere in the article? 'Cause only true bonafide airline debacles involve the TARMAC. No TARMAC, no debacle.

Actually started my day in Toronto today and there was no problems there whatsoever got to PHX later and talked to supervisor on the way and He said only minor glitches and I observed no major lines in PHX...must have just been the East side

It was the east side... from what I could see all the kiosks are out on the east side.

It wasn't on the TARMAC..

The people were held HOSTAGE on the airplanes on the RUNWAY.
And they had to sit in FILTH in the terminal.

Like an ice storm could have trapped people on a highway in their cars, on a bus or even on a train.

Those have NEVER happened.

8vATE meet SARCASM, SARCASM meet 8vATE. Oh yeah. I work at jb. Tell me something I don't know. Or have you just lost your sense of humor? Or maybe I have?

Nope. I AM STILL WAY FREAKIN' FUNNY.

Beginning of the end. Not really, but we've heard it so much as of late, I wanted to use the same line.

Yeah great idea. Lets just temporarily move 7 million PNR's from one system to another "just to see what happens! lolz!"

Idiot. Next time shut your trap if you don't know whats going on.

Looks like the integration of the US/AWA reservation system didnt go too smoothly this morning. I saw at least 1000 people in the terminal this AM waiting in line in CLT.

Did they switch without running concurrent testing? I hate to say this - but the airlines could have learned from the AF on this one. We run our new software along the old software forever....even after the old software tech folks are at other jobs...and THEN....switch to the new software.

..now if I could only find those TPS cover sheets.

I'm no IT guru but I don't believe that's practical in this case. Both systems (Shares and Sabre) are already up and running. The biggest issue was migrating 7,000,000 PNRs and that happened successfully. The problems arose from the former Sabre self-serve kiosks not communicating with Shares initially. Events this big can always be done better but all things considered I think it went better than anticipated.

Exactly. The most important part is that planes were in the air. Unfortunately due to gusty winds in Philly, it took them an hour to go from gate to runway. Sittin' out there #15 for departure was no fun.

are there some new IT problems out there that havn't been diagnosed?

basic IT problems have their root cause I would think. Either the geeks at US Air don't know what they're doing or the subcontractors they hired don't or

this attempt at sending ,as somebody said, millions of files or documents into a server caused a lock up.

Does nobody test this crap at cisco systems or sunmicrosystems?

you know like the car commercials where they have a robot open and closing the door a gazillion times to the point of failure.

what happend to crash test dummies for computers?

Climbhappy:
Not to sound defensive, but huge computer system changeovers like this never go without a hitch. Since airlines are a 24/7 operation the pressure to make the changeover quick preempts elaborate paralleling of systems and no amount of testing can predict all problems.

I have a friend that flew (tried to fly) on USAir today at DCA and thought it was a complete mess. There were lines everywhere, people were yelling, and it was CHAOS according to him. You guys are handling your system integration like your seniority integration, and it suks. My friend said he will fly someone else next time. Tell Parker to quit going to the bar so much and invest in some real hardware and software.

That's what you get when you throw 2 cheap systems together.
