So why do they them "Auto Throttles"

'Cause the guy that designed them first put them on throttle-body airplanes!

I think it was USAir 5050 in LGA. Capt used the tiller on T/O. Not the main cause but contributed.

Most likely the reason why the 737 manual now has the tiller "overcontrol" warnings now. Don't know if it has always been there but based on the NTSB's comments on the 747 AFM I would guess not.
