Well since I do work at Emirates I'll chime in here. I'm one of the most senior of the 9-11 refugees. Most likely because I found my way overseas as a refugee of Gulf War I as well.

Emirates, like any job, is what you make of it. Flying overseas can be very rewarding, but it isn't for everybody. I agree with the person in the article that I am treated much better than I was in the States. I also have a very competitive pay package on a net basis. I'm very happy in Dubai as is my wife.

Americans aren't traditionally good at being expats like the British and other nationalities. It isn't something that is normal or known so it is hard to explain or convince family members that it can be a good way to advance your career and/or have a better life.

Don't believe everything you see on CNN and Fox news. It's midnight here and I could walk through the poorest part of town without the least bit of worry for my personal safety. Can you do that in your city?

Could our wacko President go postal on Iran in the near future? Yea, maybe, but I'm not going to worry about it too much. I was in Taiwan when the commies were lobbing missiles over the top of the island and it didn't affect daily life there. Two Gulf Wars and SARs have done nothing to slow Emirates growth. A U.S. war with Iran could be a little more problematic, but stuff could happen anywhere and you can't live your life in fear of what might happen.

I see tremendous growth and tremendous opportunity overseas. It's all here for the adventurous to take advantage of.

What does your wife do for a living? How difficult is it for the woman to find a job? Mine's a nurse..

There are no rivers so I haven't seen any beavers.

Very active night life.

Lots of people.

No language barriers, just cultural.

Most Americans don't have any issues with other people. Half the Middle Eastern people I meet have family or friends living in the States. Either that or they went to school there or go there all the time on vacation. Dubai is not CNN's version of the Middle East.

Lots of odd laws. Un-wed couples may not live together ( but it happens all the time ). A single woman who gets pregnant will get thrown in jail for adultery . Again, happens a lot and the doctors/nurses get them out of the country before the authorities find out. Flipping somebody the bird is a big no-no. Jail time followed by deportation is the usualy penalty for that.

My wife raises our child and takes care of me. That's a full time job.

A nurse can find a job in a heartbeat.

I have been drinking, actually quite a bit. I have been enjoying my time off to the MAX.


There is a little anti-americanism, but only to guys that personify the "Ugly American" concept. I have shown that myself after a big night in Hong Kong.

Overall though if you understand it is there "train set" and have any civility what-so-ever you will do more boozing and partying with these guys then anywhere else. They are a very professional pilot group, but I mostly fly with Candians and Americans being based out of LAX.

Yea, I know, but the funny thing is I found that both in the military and in civilian aviation the more social aviators are and the more they party in there off time with their peers the more professional they come across in the cockpit.

I heard Cathay has some pretty insane medical requirements? Can you shed any light on this?

I don't know if they are insane, but for some reason, most guys end up having something wrong with their EKG.

I did, and had to get a stress test done to prove to them I wasn't about to keel over from acute angina.

They also do quite a few hearing tests and an extensive eye exam. It's similar to a FAA first class, but a bit more extensive.

For those in the military, the entry physical is nowhere near as bad as the Navy/Marine Corps avaiation physical.
