I decline to give you a list of reasons since I have never worked there, I do have friends at Emirates, Qatar and Gulf Air (all trying to leave), if you are considering going to the Middle East I would highly advise you to get opinions directly from people working there now, try PPRuNe. I've heard enough to keep me away from a direct entry A330.

Yea, if the SHTF, I could be home from any place I would be while at work in 1 to 1.5 hours by plane...if I don't get shot down first. And if that isn't possible, 4-6 hours in a car if the roads are open.

If you're overseas, you might as well be in outer space if something globally bad happens.

Well, I might not be "Smack Dab" in the middle of the US, but San Diego is just fine with me. I spend maybe 3 nights a month in Hong Kong and maybe 7 nights in ANC. I have 6 weeks of vacation a year and never have to based anywhere but LAX for my entire career.

I am very much a patriot. I have been in the military as both an enlisted guy and an officer for over 18 years and still serve today with very much pride. So don't EVER call me out on that.

Some foreign airlines ARE very shaky, but some are extreamy stable. Look at Nippon, JAL, and Cathay.

As everyone says, "To each his own" but don't give up flying and work at Lowes just because you're affraid of the unknown. Do some reaserch. Think of it this way. You are taking money for a foreign company and spending it in America. Exactly opposite of what the illegals are doing.

My goal originally was to work for Delta, American, or United. Since those didn't really work out this seems to be a very good second choice.

Well since I do work at Emirates I'll chime in here. I'm one of the most senior of the 9-11 refugees. Most likely because I found my way overseas as a refugee of Gulf War I as well.

Emirates, like any job, is what you make of it. Flying overseas can be very rewarding, but it isn't for everybody. I agree with the person in the article that I am treated much better than I was in the States. I also have a very competitive pay package on a net basis. I'm very happy in Dubai as is my wife.

Americans aren't traditionally good at being expats like the British and other nationalities. It isn't something that is normal or known so it is hard to explain or convince family members that it can be a good way to advance your career and/or have a better life.

Don't believe everything you see on CNN and Fox news. It's midnight here and I could walk through the poorest part of town without the least bit of worry for my personal safety. Can you do that in your city?

Could our wacko President go postal on Iran in the near future? Yea, maybe, but I'm not going to worry about it too much. I was in Taiwan when the commies were lobbing missiles over the top of the island and it didn't affect daily life there. Two Gulf Wars and SARs have done nothing to slow Emirates growth. A U.S. war with Iran could be a little more problematic, but stuff could happen anywhere and you can't live your life in fear of what might happen.

I see tremendous growth and tremendous opportunity overseas. It's all here for the adventurous to take advantage of.
