The military is fueling airplanes with coal to gas technology. Virgin has flown a 747 with ethanol I think it was.

Big difference between a pilot feasibility program conducted by a not-for-profit, money-no-object military vs. what's needed for commercial aviation.

I don't think either the Virgin marketing flight or the military testbed program are viable for US commercial aviation, nor were they ever intended to be.

Free up oil for aviation; alternatives are available for automobiles (like natural gas).

virgin flew a 747 with one engine running on cocnut oil. The flight was from London to paris. It required using 150,000 coconuts for the 1+43 flight.

OIL.. as I stated above... the point being if the truckers and cars are using alternative fuels, then the Airlines and trains will have cheaper prices as they are the only user of the commodity... Pickens and many others believe that this is a near term plan (5 years) that is well within our reach..

Add this plan along with increasing our own domestic drilling and natural gas pipelines & conversions and the dependancy on overseas sources are greatly reduced, perhaps less then 30% of todays imports..

I heard yesterday that we have enough Natural gas under our own soil to power our country for 150 years!!

Hey, Its a plan, it's a goal.. I have not seen anyone else in the position to suggest such detail yet.. again, JMHO..

By that thought Avgas should be pennies per gallon since it is the only leaded fuel still used anywhere. Yet it's more than jet fuel...

US airlines poised to shed 36,000 jobs

DALLAS (AP) _ Airlines are contributing to the increase in unemployment, as they slash thousands of jobs to save money in the midst of higher fuel costs.

Carriers plan to cut about 36,000 jobs by the end of the year, according to the Air Transport Association, a trade group for the largest U.S. airlines.

The airlines are cutting flights — reducing U.S. capacity about 9 percent, ATA estimates — so they don't need as many pilots, flight attendants and baggage handlers.

On Friday, the Labor Department announced that the unemployment rate jumped to 6.1 percent in August, from 5.7 percent in July, crossing the psychological barrier of 6 percent joblessness.

The Labor Department said jobs in air transportation fell only about 3,000 in August. But many of the job cuts announced by U.S. airlines haven't taken place yet — meaning the worst is yet to come.

AMR Corp., parent of American Airlines, the nation's largest carrier, has announced it will cut 8 percent of its work force or about 6,800 jobs. Spokesman Tim Wagner said Friday, "We are not fully there yet."

This week American sent layoff notices to 469 workers at five U.S. airports, the latest in a series of similar moves to comply with laws requiring notice to those affected by large-scale job cuts. The airline said it hopes to avoid layoffs by offering voluntary severance packages.

UAL Corp.'s United Airlines is cutting 7,000 jobs by the end of 2009, and Continental Airlines Inc. will shed 3,000 by the end of this year.

Continental spokeswoman Julie King said more than 90 percent of the positions were eliminated through voluntary leave, early retirements and job-sharing, although 140 to 180 pilots will be laid off beginning next week.

Delta Air Lines Inc. said it would shed 4,000 jobs, and Northwest Airlines Corp., which Delta is buying, plans to cut 2,500 jobs. US Airways Group Inc. has said it would trim 2,000.

The outlook for a recovery in the airline industry is compounded by a combination of high fuel costs and weakening demand that is spreading from the United States to international markets that had been strong. The sluggish economy is also taking a toll on air transport of cargo.

The Air Transport Association forecasts that U.S. airlines will lose $7 billion to $10 billion this year, although the estimate was issued before the recent decrease in oil prices, which should show up in cheaper jet fuel. David Castelveter, a spokesman for the group, said fuel prices haven't come down enough to make airlines profitable.

Some analysts believe that airlines could rebound if oil prices continue to drop and reductions in airline capacity — about 10 percent for U.S. carriers as a whole later this year — result in higher fares. It's tough to say whether that will reverse the job losses.

"It's too early to say when it will come back," Castelveter said. "Airlines would have to increase capacity before they start hiring again."

WHAT is OBAMA's plan on anything???

I want to hear exactly what he is going to do...

I don't need to hear how bad Bush and MCcain are--tell me what OBAMA is going to do...They always tell you had bad of shape the economy is in, how bad the war is, how bad the energy is,,,but WE ALL know that....

TELL US WHAT you =yes you OBAMA going to do exactlly to SAVE THE DAY...have not heard anything?

But how bad of shape the country is in??

Obama stands for change.

What that means exactly...I dont know.

Obama stands for change.

What that means exactly...I dont know.

It means socialism.

Kinda funny we spent so much on the Cold War and defeating communist ideals, only to turn around and usher it in ourselves.

Socialism is socialism...just because we elect the people who institute it doesn't make it any better than a communist dictator imposing it.

There are plenty of hard working people in the World that would kill for a shot at the American Dream. I know...I've lived and worked in Europe for the past 18 months, and have run into many of them. If you what this cr*p (socialism), move!!! Because I don't want you ruining our country...IT DOESN'T WORK!!! Winston Churchill said it best, "The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries." If you want to be miserable, do it somewhere else!

IMHO the biggest threat to the US is dependency on the natural resources of other nations. OPEC has us by the balls!!! Unfortunately they're only squeezing hard enough for us to feel it. At any time they could crush our manhood and destroy our existance...in a matter of months...and they know this.

Care to elaborate on what you mean? How exactly are we inviting it in? Im not trying to flame your comment, as I am still very neutral in the recent political developments, I am just curious as to what you mean.
