Didn't know which forum to put this in so I stuck it in here. Would like the opinion of everyone on whether to make a goal of a career at UPS or at NetJets. Thanks

Impossible to answer that question without knowing what your other goals are.

Both are certainly good companies, but completely different flying.

Very hard to set your goal to work for one company. I grew up my whole life sure that I would join my father and brothers at Eastern, but Mr. Lorenzo had other ideas.

If you are a people person and dont mind constant change once you are on duty. then you might like NetJets.

If you have to fly big airplanes, want to know exactly where you are going in advance and dont mind the back side of the clock, then you will be happy at UPS.

I know people that are very happy at both places.

I've talked to many NetJets pilots who seem to enjoy their work very much. Dont know anything about UPS

My goals are simple, live back east, and make a respectable wage. Both things I can get from these companies. So I want other opinions that maybe can shed light on something I havn't considered, I'm on the fence on this decision. I would say I know a lot more about NJA than UPS.

I don't know much about UPS, but I have flown as a passenger on several NetJets flights.

My observations were that the crew seemed happy with their jobs (could have been a show for the passengers, but I felt they were sincere) and they fly fairly modern equipment.

I believe that they have a 7 on/ 7 off kind of schedule.

If it were me, I would go NetJets simply for the variety of flying destinations. But almost certainly UPS has some very strong points as well.

7 on 7 off is only one schedual they do, they have a few others that you get to choose from i think

Here is what I think about the big two cargo companies, UPS and FedEx. These companies offer the best job security in the industry simply because there will always be a need to ship stuff around the world. These companies have been doing it the longest here in the states and they are here to stay. If you want endless job security, go to UPS.

That is all as long as our government doesn't allow full cargo, pax, or both cabotage. If cabotage (already allowed for cargo out of Anchorage) is allowed, then all the airlines and cargo operators in the US are gonna have some big problems. As long as foreign carriers can't come in to compete point to point against Fedex and UPS they are gonna be just about as safe a bet as can be, with probably the best pay for pilots anywhere by the end of a career. But our current government keeps flirting with Open Skies for Europe and the current AK cargo cabotage is already a foot in the door. I'm at NetJets and love my job. I would probably bail for Fedex or UPS if I was able to get the job (unlikely since I don't have any contacts or the energy to make it happen), but no job in aviation is very safe and I'm sure if I left, NJ would get even better and wherever I went would go down the drain. It's good to know where you want to be and do whatever you can to make it happen, but by the time you have the time/ experience/ contacts, the aviation world as it is now may be very different. I was sure I was gonna be at one of the legacies by now and living the dream. My dream changed over the last 5 years as harsh realities have come to be for pilots. I am not willing to bet a career on any of the airlines anymore, but I am rolling the dice on NetJets and I realize that things very well could go down the drain here too. Good luck whatever you chose/ achieve.

Hey JTF,

I may be completely clueless here (almost always proven to be the case), but what is "cabotage"? I haven't heard that one before.

Also, out of pure curiosity, how long have you been with NJ?

Thanks

Foreign airlines flying point to point within the US.... flying that should be done by US carriers.

... oh yes, and go Brown

I have the contacts at both companies that is why this is a difficult decision. I obviously don't have the TT right now but within the next year I will have to decide which path to choose. ie. stay where I am and upgrade to Captain and get my 1000 ME PIC turbine while sacfricing instrument time or go back east and get the instrument required by NJA.

Cabotage, is when you come home from a lengthy trip unexpectedly and find a big fat English accent speaking, pipe smoking, smoking jacket wearing, Sebastian Cabot looking dude in your lazy boy, wearing your slippers and drinking tea out of your favorite coffee mug and reading your Wall Street Journal.

You will make more money at UPS to be sure - but the QOL at NJA is far superior. And you certainly wont be poor at NJA. I doubt you can go wrong with either choice. I much would depend on where you want to live and what type of flying you wish to undertake. I fly for NJA and I can't see myself leaving for UPS/Fedex but then who knows what the future holds for us all.

Its very much a matter of what kind of flying you want to do. UPS and NJA are two very different worlds. Personally I have done the cargo thing (albeit not at UPS) and the NJA thing and I am very happy here at NJA. I enjoy this type of flying and this equipment far more than the long haul in the heavies. All depends on what you like to do.
