UPS folks,

I was wondering if following a tanker across the Pacific and Atlantic in a Prowler meets the ocean crossing experience now required by UPS. Thanks in advance and apologies if this is already covered.

The application window has already closed. Perhaps once it reopens they will drop the transoceanic requirement. To answer your question; were you doing the navigating and communicating behind those tankers? Or were you following. The requirement is presently in place to fill the ANC MD-11 and B747-400 slots with experienced FO's to fly with the more junior captains who may not have flown internationally before. Flying overseas isn't rocket science, but it sure does help to have someone in the cockpit with some experience.
 
Not UPS but still amused by your post. I think its the spirit of the crossing thats important. After all, you were aviating, navigating, and communicating, albeit in a non-traditional manner.

So...... "A" for execution, and "A" for creativity. Good topic during interview.

I had to navigate my way to the relief tube and communicate my need for granola bars to ECMO 1, but other than that the tanker guys did all the work!

There's a UPS guy in my squadron who was of your opinion as well, I was just hoping someone could point me to where it's spelled out. I still have a year and a half until I have to worry about it, I just want to have my ducks in a row early.

Like so many other things UPS does... the pilot HR dept. is shameful. Phil Donahue (head of pilot HR) enacts a new policy requiring "transoceanic experience" and then COMPLETELY FAILS to explain its rationale, COMPLETELY FAILS to explain the application form, COMPLETELY FAILS to explain the pilot applicant's inability to update the application once submitted, and finally COMPLETELY FAILS to warn anyone of an application window deadline. The pilot HR dept. is dysfunctional and an embarrassment to the company.

Phil D. is fully aware of all these shortcomings. He simply doesn't care to present a professional image to the public and no one has held him accountable (should be canned!). His lack of leadership and his failure to correct the entire application and information process is abysmal. He ought to be immediately replaced with someone competent who can overhaul this mess. :mad: It's really no more complicated than the fact this dept. is headed by an incompetent middle-manager on a temporary assignment, who is either incapable or unwilling to straighten things out.

As for the "transoceanic experience" requirement... they're looking for pilots with Class II nav experience. If you're experienced with HF position reports and class II nav procedures, that's what they're looking for.

Unfortunately for us... there's a thousand little incompetent Phil D's running around UPS. :angryfire
