Well the scuttlebutt is we finished our last complete week of negotiations with no progress on the major items. I believe we have a few items left but the word is that it will soon become a very nasty environment. I believe that we have a few days of negotiations left. I'm not looking for much though.

Oh well.

And that "word" you got from the B&G? Always a credible source of info with the same few people constantly bitching about stuff.

Freightnazi or any other UPS folks,

Sitting around waiting for the call right now for a class date and wondering what exactly is going on with contract negotiations for you guys. I think the National Mediation Board set the next deadline for March, is that correct? Basically, I'm just curious how this whole process works, strictly worked for Uncle Sam, so can you guys dumb it down for me a little(I'll be honest, I don't even know what a "National Mediation Board" is, but I wanted to sound smart). I usually get lost about 3 words into any discussion on contract negotiations, TA's, PBS....Also, how far out is the actual "deadline" if there is such an animal? Thanks for all replies(3 syllables or less and no acronyms!) Thanks.

LABOR / Probationary Pilot Relationship / Caution

Afpa,

Hey man... I see you have been posting a lot lately regarding UPS, the pool, class dates, etc etc... I think you should be very happy to be in the position that you are in... You almost seem a little too anxious... I would recommend caution in your approach to the what if's with contract info... class dates etc etc... Management doesn't look kindly to the "outgoing" type...The bottom line is you will be hired as a probationary pilot and as such you should walk the straight line as far as drinking the "brown aid"... Let us line pilots take care of you... Don't worry about the contract... Just be glad to be on property... Once you get through school and you have laid low for a while - - then you can start to educate yourself on "your contract" and the process...

As far as the contract goes we are entering the end game and unfortunately sometimes things get nasty... Hopefully no hostages are taken. My suggestion to you is to study hard, be a yes man, and stay in "ground clutter"....

If you want to research the RLA (railway labor act) check out the "media tab" on the union website... It will answer questions on the process... As to the details of negotiations... refer to what I said above...

Just remember... "its all good" in the end...

Striker.

Hang in there UPS guys, I should be interviewing shortly and can't wait to enjoy the benefits of your great new contract!

Striker,

Thanks for the advice, well taken. Believe me, I'm not putting the cart before the horse, I know I'm not even hired yet, much less off of probation. I just wanted to understand some of the terminology that gets thrown around here. Especially appreciate the website, that was really what I was looking for, just some general information about how the overall process works. You may have mistaken my extreme boredom for anxiousness, I've been in bed with the flu for the past five days with no TV!! Nothing to do but surf the net, I think I've almost found the end of it. Thanks again.

I agree with a lot of what Ted had to say, specifically the highlighted portion. If you're eager to learn and have the time on your hands education on any subject is great. However, Ted offers some sage advice for all new hires everywhere ... lay low and be a company guy during probation. I found probation to be a non-issue. Show up when you are supposed to, operate the acft safely and according to standards, and you won't hear a peep from anyone.

As far as negotiations go ... it's both UPS and FedEx's turn currently. At UPS we are entering our THIRD year of talks (mediated the last year) and unfortunately it appears our negotiations will go down the well-worn traditional labor relations path of nasty public confrontation (in my opinion). We'll know more in a month. The NMB can either release us, freeze us, or schedule more mediated talks. At any rate, the rhetoric between the sides will undoubtedly heat up and (if history is any guide) the work atmosphere will take a drastic nose dive.

What does this mean for a new hire? In a nutshell, not much. Lay low, do your job professionally and to the best of your ability, and DO NOT even remotely get involved with this fight (you will receive similar guidance from the IPA).

Three things I'll never understand: electricity, big business and women!

So how far along are you guys with your negotiations. Is anything TA'd yet or what? Just wondering if you all are hung up on the $ signs or if there is alot of other stuff to. I'm sure you don't want to get into to much detail, but I was just curious since we at FedEx are about 2 years behind you.

If you read the company press releases and internal "rah-rah" memos we're making tremendous progress, have a terrific working relationship with our pilots and we'll have an agreement any day now ... and we routinely build bonfires and sing songs of company unity together!

According to the IPA we've agreed on the need to wear a uniform.

Are we going to get a uniform change? God I hope that was part of the contract. TH

:) After UPS buys FedEx for CASH and staples you guys to the bottom of our list, I suppose we could make the concession to wear purple and orange uniforms to honor the soon to be forgotten colors of the former FedEx!!! :)

Don't kid about that. I have bad dreams about our current uniform. Are you serious about the new uniform and if so, how'd you know? thanks, TH

What rock have you been hiding under? The announcement of new uniforms came out early last year. The company and the uniform committee are working on the details. Check the IPA website under uniform committee for pictures of the latest proposals.

cool thanks
