Just wondering if someone might provide just some real basic info on flying for "Brown"

Is it a week on week off?

Can you bid day or night flying?

Still airport "HOT" reserve?

Junior aircraft and senior aircraft?

Still hiring into the engineer's seat?

Hiring into all fleets or?

How often can you bid new aircraft?

Best fleet to be on for lifestyle or variety?

Anything else you can think of.

Really want to fly there (Miss the DC8 a lot)so just trying to get some basic info.

Let me try;

• The current TA will try to achieve week-on/off. But, this remains to be seen. However, mostly weekends-off, unless you are on reserve, and as a new-hire thou shall.

• Daytime flying is very senior. But doing reserve, or trip trading you may get a day time pairing, just every now and then.

• Airport HOT, YES!!! The proposed TA is supposed to place some restrictions on Hot Standby. But HS are mostly treated as a line, not another assignment for Reserve, at least on the bid packages.

• UPS is not equipment differentiated, therefore there are no prevailing demographics for people bid their lifestyle.

• FE seat, I would forecast YES!!! How many? It depends in the exodus of over 60 FE’s with the TA (Temporary Agreement, which could become the next contract). Now, if willing or offered ANC, the right seat of the MD11 is up for grabs. But I believe, that other FO seats will be available every now and then (it saves on training costs).

• People will be hired IAW operational needs and training availability, that will determine the fleets available.

• New aircrafts will be available depending on system and/or realignment bids posted by the company. Probably UPS will have more than one each year, with the new ANC domicile.

• Lifestyle vs fleet. Very personal preference. If you like reserve then probably the 72 and 8. If you commute Z. If you like domestic the 300. Again, very personal preference.

• Frugal and austere trucking company which owns an airline. But is making a Billion each quarter.

depending on the aircraft usualy 14 day trips the AB is more like 10-12 day trips for Europe. Generally speaking plan on 2 weeks on 2 weeks off for international. A lot of this information is fluid right now depending on how the TA comes out.

If going to ANC, that will be the MD11, and eventually there will be a 747-400 domicile probably next year, most of the flying will be to the Orient.
Coming out of initial training, I believe they have a sweet deal if you stay put in ANC for 3 years. At least for now at ANC only. "airwillydrvr" is correct about the transition.
As for International, that requires further clarification. MIA is a 75/76 domicile flying mostly to Central and South America, but they are picking a fair share of Domestic lines. Same goes for ONT, 75/76 to the Pacific, but also doing Domestic flying. All other equipment (72, 8, A3, 74, MD, 75, and Z) are at SDF. The MD and 75Z, with a predominantly international structure also perform domestic flying.
However, if doing Intl (fairly commuter friendly), you could "expect" 2 weeks-on/2-off. But this depends on your line guarantee and the value of the pairing/s.
But we have to wait for the outcome of the T/A, and then see how UPS works out the Scheduling section. Voting closes on Thurs, 31 Aug.

Can anyone tell me the likelyhood of even getting an interview with a civilian background, and only one letter of rec. Currently driving a 9. I figure it's between slim and none...

It's possible. We have a lot of civilian pilots. Is your rec. a line pilot or management? I think a management rec gives you a better chance although I know people that only had one line pilot rec and got hired. It's kind of a mystery on how they pick people. I would say if you reapplied, your guy/gal put a rec in for you and they do not call, the only other thing I can think of is to go to as many job fairs to suck up to them as possible. I would say you do have a chance though, but ya gotta work it!

I only flew civilian and one rec. It all depends on your credentials and whom your rec is from.
 
350 corp. If you have a college degree, your chances are great. One rec. will get you called. Better if the referral is a pilot, but doesn't matter if it's line or mgmt.

Any Mgmt rec helps- pilot or not!
 
Makes sense, but I was wondering, does UPS find a way to get you there?
Or are you responsible to get there to sit hot reserve?
 
So hot reserve can be good if you live there. Someone said that Phx was very junior. How senior is Columbia and what aircraft?

The Company reaffirmed their intention to continue hiring as fast as
the UPS Training Center can train and qualify crewmembers. The
Company confirmed that the new scheduling rules—along with expanded
flying opportunities—will continue the pressure for additional hiring.
Further hiring will be needed to ensure system integrity.

Don't know if this has already been adressed, but what does a typical week 'on' look like at UPS? I'm on the pax side. For example, I'm used to 3 or 4 day trips, duty in early or mid morning first day, out late afternoon last day. Overnights are 10-14 hours, starting at about 2100L for late and 1200L for early. I just have no idea how that would compare to a cargo schedule.
